WHITEWATER (April 15, 2012) - UW-Stout jumped out to a four run lead, saw that lead evaporate and turn into a deficit, then staged a comeback that fell short as the Blue Devils lost the second contest, 11-8, to UW-Whitewater and the Warhawks completed the four-game sweep Sunday.
After losing the first game 12-1 in eight innings, the Blue Devil (13-13,5-9 WIAC) offense showed life immediately in the second game as
Santiago Morales (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn) hit a lead-off triple - his fifth of the season - then came home on
Ryan Gangestad's (Fr, Maple Grove, Minn) groundout to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.
Stout added three runs in the second inning as
Colin Pechacek (Fr, River Falls),
Jake Duske (Sr, Montrose, Minn) and Morales each drove in a run to give Stout a 4-0 lead.
But the Warhawks (17-6,8-2 WIAC) got all four runs back in the bottom of the third, then added three runs in the fifth to take the lead and another run in the sixth for an 8-4 lead.
Stout got one run back in the seventh on
Ben Yaucher's (Jr, Janesville) solo home run and, after the Warhawks scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, added three more runs on a pair of home runs in the eighth inning to pull to within 9-8.
Charlie Meyer (Fr, Janesville) hit a two-run home run in the inning and Duske hit a solo shot.
Once again, the Warhawks answered the bell with a two-run eighth inning, then shut Stout down in the ninth.
Morales was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple to lead Stout. Meyer was 3-for-4, as was Pechacek..
In the opener, Whitewater scored at least one run in the first six innings - including a four run second inning. Stout's only run came in the third inning when Gangestad's double drove in Morales, who had led off with a double.
Stout will host Bethel University, Wednesday, April 18 at 2:30 p.m., then will be at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22.
