WHITEWATER (April 14, 2012) - UW-Whitewater used big innings in both games to sweep a pair of games from UW-Stout Saturday, winning the first 10-6 and the second 11-3.
The Blue Devils (13-11, 5-7 WIAC) tied the first game at 4-4 with a three run fifth inning, but Whitewater (15-6, 6-2 WIAC) answered back with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to the 10-6 opening game win.
Charlie Meyer (Fr, Janesville) and
Jake Duske (Sr, Montrose, Minn) hit back-to-back home runs to pull Stout to within one run, 4-3, to open the fifth inning.
Santiago Morales (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn) reached on a single, stole second, then moved to third on a ground out before coming home on
Ben Yaucher's (Jr, Janesville) sacrifice fly to tie the game.
The Warhawks took command with a six run sixth inning, keyed by a pair of home runs.
Duske went 3-for-4 in the game, scoring three runs and tallying three RBI. His two run home run in the ninth inning pulled Stout to within four runs.
In the second game, the Warhawks used a six run second inning to carry the day and the Blue Devils stranded 10 runners as the two teams were nearly even with hits. Whitewater tallied 13 hits, while Stout had 11 hits.
With no score, Whitewater scored two runs in the second inning with no outs, then scored four more runs with two outs. The Warhawks' Marty Herum and Jared Fox had back-to-back home runs to power the inning.
Stout cut the lead in half in the top of the third. Duske and Morales opened the inning with consecutive singles.
Ryan Gangestad (Fr, Maple Grove, Minn) brought home Duske with a single. Yaucher drove in Morales and Gangestad with a single down the right field line, but that would be it for Stout in the scoring department.
Whitewater added two runs in the bottom of the third, then added a single run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.
Matt Guida (Jr, Hawley, Minn) was 2-for-3 to lead Stout at the plate. The Warhawks had five players with two hits and the first three batters in the line-up - Matt Beyer, Friend and Fon - each had two RBI.
The teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday, April 15, but inclement weather is in the forecast.
