MENOMONIE (April 11, 2012) - After a strong first game 15-7 win over UW-Superior, UW-Stout's offense was lost until late in the game when a Blue Devil rally came up just short and Stout needed to settle for a split with the Yellowjackets, falling in the second game 11-9, Wednesday at Nelson Field.
The Blue Devils (13-9, 5-5 WIAC) mustered big time artillery in first game, led by
Jon Schoch's (Sr, Chippewa Falls) two home runs,
Charlie Meyer's (Fr, Janesville) five RBI, 3-for-5 effort and four doubles, one each by Meyer,
Ryan Gangestad (Fr, Maple Grove, Minn),
Matt Guida (Jr, Hawley, Minn) and
Brett Vavra (Fr, Chippewa Falls).
After allowing the Yellowjackets (12-9, 3-3 WIAC) a 2-0 lead on TJ Evanson's two-run home run in the second inning, Stout tied the score on Schoch's lead-off double in thesecond and
Jake Duske's (Sr, Montrose, Minn) RBI single.
Superior took the lead back with a pair of runs in the third, but Stout took the lead for good with a four-run third inning. Guida doubled in a run, and Meyer plated a pair of with a double.
AJ Yusten (Sr, Zumbrota, Minn) moved to third on Meyer's double and came home when the ball was misplayed in the outfield.
Superior would manage single runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings. Stout added a pair of runs in the fifth and three in the sixth as Schoch delivered a two-run home run to key the inning. Meyer highlighted Stout's four-run eighth inning with a two-run single.
Cory Hedeen (Sr, Cannon Falls, Minn) improved to 3-2, striking out three, while working five innings. Schoch and Guida were both 3-for-4 with four runs scored.
Stout's offense went dormant in the second game, as Superior built a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Duske opened the inning with a lead-off home run. Schoch scored Gangestad with an RBI double and Schoch scored on Guida's single up the middle as Stout cut the lead to 7-3.
But the Yellowjackets got all three runs back in the top of the seventh, all three runs coming in as unearned as the Blue devils committed two errors in the inning.
Meyer lifted his first collegiate home run in the seventh inning, but Superior matched that in the eighth with a solo home run by catcher Jeff Miller.
Stout's offense sparkled in the bottom of the ninth. Coming into the innings, the Blue Devils smacked around six hits and scored five runs.
Santiago Morales (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn) struggled throughout the day at the plate, but drove in two runs with his first hit of the afternoon in the inning. Schoch doubled in another run and Vavra plated a pair of runs with a single to right field to pull to within the final 11-9 score and Stout had the potential game winning run at the plate, but Nick Bursick faced only one batter to notch the save with a groundout.
Ethan Branum worked 7.2 innings and recorded seven strikeouts as he faced only three batters in the second, fourth and fifth innings, and only four in the first and third innings.
Duske was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored for Stout. Gangestad, Schoch and Meyer each had two hits. Meyer was 5-for-10 on the day with six RBI, while Schoch was 5-for-9 with five RBI.
Stout will be at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15, then return home to face Bethel University, Wednesday, April 18 at 2:30 p.m.
