ROSEMOUNT, Minn (March 7, 2012) - Even outhitting the opponent by a nearly 2-1 margin couldn't give the UW-Stout softball team a win in a close game as the Blue Devils lost both ends of a doubleheader, 6-2, 2-1, to St. Olaf College at the Irish Sports Dome Wednesday.
After being held to one hit in the first game until the seventh inning, Stout (2-4) starting stroking the ball in the second contest, rolling up nine hits to the Oles' five.
Both teams put a run on the board in the first inning. The Oles (2-0) took the early lead on an RBI single by Jessica Wilson in the top of the inning. Stout answered back with three hits in their half of the inning, but could only manufacture one run when Samantha Hastings (So, Waukesha) drove in
Erin Moss (Jr, Munster, Ind), who reached on a lead-off single, with a single to left field.
The Oles threatened in the third inning, leaving a runner stranded at third when Stout pitcher
Laura Vanderhoof (So, Mankato, Minn) struck out the last two batters in the inning.
Stout stranded single runners in third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings and twice got runners as far as second base, but could not bring anyone home.
The Oles got the game-winning run in the top of the seventh when Maggie Scholer's sacrifice fly to left field scored Natalie Mironov.
Vanderhoof finished the game striking out eight, and scattering five hits, while her counterpart, Jessica Green, fanned nine, allowing nine hits.
In the opener, St. Olaf scored twice in the third inning to break a scoreless tie. Stout got on the board in the fifth when
Courtney Richardson (So, Miltona, Minn) drove in a run.
The Oles then tacked on four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Stout's bats finally woke up in the seventh inning as Moss, Richardson and
Alison Gray (Jr, St. Cloud, Minn) each got hits, with Gray's double driving in Moss for Stout's final run.
Stout will travel to the Orlando, Fla, area to play 10 games in the National Training Center College Spring Games, March 10-15.
