MESA, Ariz. (March 13, 2012) - UW-Stout finished their Arizona spring break trip by splitting a pair of games with Wesleyan, Conn, University, dropping the first, 7-6, but bouncing back to win the second, 13-6, at the Russmatt Arizona Baseball Invitational Thursday.
The Blue Devils (7-3) surrendered a five run lead in the first game, but came back with a vengeance in the second game, getting six runs in the first inning and building up an eight run lead before Wesleyan got on the board.
In the opener, Wesleyan (3-3) took a 1-0 lead with a single run in the first inning. Stout got RBIs from
Matt Guida (Jr, Hawley, Minn) and
Jon Schoch (Sr, Chippewa Falls) and scored another run on an errant throw. The Blue Devils doubled their lead with another three-run outburst in the top of the fourth inning when
Ben Yaucher (Jr, Janesville) hit a two-run single and Guida drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
But the Cardinals got all six runs back in the fifth inning, with three of the runs coming on Joe Giamo's triple to left center. Stout got runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could not advance either past first base.
Stout had no problems with offensive power early in the second game, sending 10 batters to the plate in the first inning.
Ryan Gangestad's (Fr, Maple Grove, Minn) triple drove in
Santiago Morales (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn), who opened the inning with a walk. Guida walked and Gangestad scored on Schoch's sacrifice fly.
Brett Vavra's (Fr, Chippewa Falls) double.plated Guida.
Chris Sill (Jr, Wabasha, Minn) drove in Vavra. Morales' second plate appearance of the inning, a double, brought in two more runs and Stout held a 6-0 lead.
Two more runs were put on the scoreboard in the second inning on RBIs by
AJ Yusten (Sr, Zumbrota, Minn) and Sill. Both teams scored a run in the fourth, with Stout's Sill recording his third RBI of the game. Schoch drove in a run in the fifth and the Blue Devils added three more runs in the sixth on RBIs by
Charlie Meyer (Fr, Janesville), Gangestad and Guida.
Guida and Morales both went 3-for-4. Sill was 3-for-3 and Gangestad, Vavra, Yusten and
Jake Duske (Sr, Montrose, Minn) each had two hits. Stout pounded out 19 hits in the game, the team's most hits in a single game since April 3, 2010, when they pounded Finlandia University for 26 hits.
The Blue Devils improved their overall record to 7-3 and went 6-2 in Arizona.
Stout is idle until opening their WIAC schedule by hosting UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1.
