Stout rebounds from loss, split with Macalester

MESA, Ariz. (March 14, 2012) - UW-Stout rebounded from a first game 9-2 loss to Macalester College to defeat the Scots 9-6 in the second game of a doubleheader at the RussMatt Baseball Invitational.

Macalester snapped Stout's five game winning streak by jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the first inning, then added single runs in the second and fourth innings before tallying three runs in the top of the seventh.

The Blue Devils got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the first when Santiago Morales (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn) led off with a triple, then came home on Ryan Gangestad's (Fr, Maple Grove, Minn) sacrifice fly to center field. Stout's other run came in the fourth inning when Jon Schoch (Sr, Chippewa Falls) led off with a triple and came home on AJ Yusten's (Sr, Zumbrota, Minn) ground out.

The Blue Devils (6-2) reversed the tables in the second game, jumping all over the Scots with three runs in the first and five in the second.

Schoch and Gangestad each drove in a run in the first and Matt Guida (Jr, Hawley, Minn) scored on a passed ball to give Stout a 3-0 lead in the first.

Jake Duske (Sr, Montrose, Minn) tied the school record for most triples in a single season when he led off the five-run second inning with a three-bagger. Duske would score on an error to start the scoring turnstile. Guida drove in a run and Brent Vavra (Fr, Chippewa Falls) used a sacrifice fly to score another. Yusten smacked a two-run triple to close out the scoring.

Macalester pecked away, getting single runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings. Guida hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh and Macalester added a pair of runs to close out the game.

Gangestad went 4-for-5 in the second game, while Morales was 3-for-5. Guida, Schoch, Yusten and Ben Yaucher (Jr, Janesville) each had a pair of hits. Stout collected 18 hits in the game. Carter Vogt (Jr, Buffalo, Minn) recorded the wi, striking out three.

Stout will close out their Arizona trip Thursday, March 15 when they play Wesleyan, Conn, University.
