Stout records Arizona sweep of Marian

MESA, Ariz. (March 11, 2012) - UW-Stout hung on in the opener, then needed three runs in the bottom of the sixth to notch a win in the second game as the Blue Devils swept past Marian University, 3-2, 6-4, in Stout's opener in the RussMatt Baseball Arizona Invitational Sunday.

Cory Hedeen (Sr, Cannon Falls, Minn) had scattered four runs throughout the first six innings but got in trouble in the bottom of the seventh, allowing a pair of Marian hits. Reliever John Ewald (So, Maplewood, Minn) got a strikeout, then allowed a walk to load the bases with two outs. The Sabres (2-2) Matt Bromley drove in a pair of runs before Ewald forced a groundout to end the game.

The Blue Devils (3-1) took the lead when AJ Yusten's (Sr, Zumbrota, Minn) sacrifice fly got Stout on the scoreboard in the first inning. Stout got their second run of the game in the second inning when Jake Duske (Sr, Montrose, Minn) reached on a two-out, infield single bunt, then stole second and reached third when the throw went into centerfield. Duske came home on Santiago Morales' (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn) infield single.

Duske, Morales and Yusten figured into Stout's final run of the game in the fifth inning. Duske reached on a lead-off deep to the hole at shortstop. Morales moved Duske with a shallow hit to centerfield. Both players moved on Yusten's groundout. Duske came home on Matt Guida's sacrifice fly.

Hedeen finished the game allowing six hits and two earned runs. He struck out one, but walked none. Ewald earned the save, going two-thirds of an inning, facing four batters.

In the nightcap, Marian took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. Stout broke onto the board in the third inning when Colin Pechacek (Fr, River Falls) reached on an error and advanced to second. Pechacek moved to third on Ryan Gangestad's (Fr, Maple Grove, Minn) single, then scored when a pick off attempt on Gangestad went into the outfield.

Stout would score individual runs in the fourth and fifth innings.The Sabres committed three errors in the fourth inning, leading to Pechacek's RBI single to drive in Yusten. Duske opened the fifth inning with a triple, then scored on Morales' sacrifice fly to give Stout a 3-2 lead.

But Marian would chase Stout starter Tyler Hamann (Jr, Marathon) after giving up an unearned run to tie the game at 3-3.

Stout exploded for their biggest inning of the day in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs. After leading off with a double, Jon Schoch (Sr, Chippewa Falls) would score on an error, one of six Marian errors in the game. Pechacek and Duske drove in runs to give Stout a 6-3 lead.

Adam Widder (Fr, Wauwatosa) came on and picked up the save, allowing one run. Widder got himself out of trouble, stranding a pair of Marian runners.

Andrew Driessen (Jr, Champlin Park, Minn) recorded the win, working one-third of an inning and getting a strike out in the only batter he faced in relief of Hamann. Hamann scattered four hits over 5.2 innings, striking out two, walking two and allowing three runs, two earned.

On the day, Duske went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and one RBI. Morales was 3-for-7 with a pair of RBI. Pechacek had two RBI, going 1-for-3.

Stout is scheduled to meet Dordt College, Monday, March 12, then will be off Tuesday, March 13.
