Jake Duske (Sr, Montrose, Minn) delivered a game-winning double in the sixth inning and freshman pitcher
Adam Widder (Wauwatosa) recorded his first collegiate win - as did rookie head coach
Toby Gardenhire - as UW-Stout defeated Hamline University, 5-4, in the second game of a doubleheader Monday at Mall of America Field at the HHH Metrodome.
Coming off a 7-3 first game loss, the Blue Devils (1-1) only trailed briefly in the second game. After spotting the Pipers a 1-0 lead after a half inning,
Jon Schoch (Sr, Chippewa Falls) launched a rocket over the left field wall to drive in
Ben Yaucher (Jr, Janesville), who got on with a double, and
Matt Guida (Jr, Hawley, Minn), who was hit by a pitch, to take a 3-1 lead.
Neither team scored until the fourth inning, but first year centerfielder
Santiago Morales (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) made a diving catch on the lead-off play of the third inning. The play would prove it's importance before the game was over. Later on the in the inning, the Pipers' Andy King tripled, which would have driven a run in what proved to be a tight game.
In the fourth, Hamline scored by moving runners on a sacrifice bunt, then scored a run on a sacrifice fly. Blue Devil shortstop
Ryan Gangestad (Fr, Maple Grove, Minn) drove in
AJ Yusten (Sr, Zumbrota, Minn) on a hit deep to the shortstop.
The Pipers tied the game in the sixth inning. Cam Smith led off with a double, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Tyler Johnson drove Smith in with a double. Evan Cordell came in as a pinch runner and was moved to third on a bunt.
Widder entered the game for the Blue Devils and gave up a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Widder got the next batter to fly out to end the inning, then became the pitcher of record and got the win as the Blue Devils scored with two outs.
Gangestad, who went 4-for-5 on the night, drew a walk, the stole second set up Duske's game-winning hit, which Duske pushed to right centerfield.
John Ewald (So, Maplewood, Minn) got the save, facing four batters.
No Stout batters had more than one hit in the game. For the Pipers, King was 2-for-3 and Cory Miller was 2-for-2.
In the opener, the Pipers jumped all over the Blue Devils in the early innings, Stout did take a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Chris Sill (Jr, Wabasha, Minn) drove in a run on an infield single.
The Pipers took the lead in the bottom half of the inning when King smashed a two-run double, then drove in three runs with a home run in second inning after Mark Radmacher drove in a run.
Stout would cut the lead to 6-2 when a Morales ground out drove in a run, but the Pipers got that run back in the fifth. An RBI triple by Duske in the sixth ended the scoring.
Gangestad went 3-for-3 in the game for Stout. King had five RBI for the Pipers and was 2-for-3. Radmacher was 2-for-4.
Stout is idle until their annual spring break trip to Arizona,
