STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: Everybody played and everybody scored as UW-Stout ran out to surpass the century mark in a 106-51 win at Crown College, Wednesday. The Blue Devils completely dominated, well, just about everything. They put up a 2:1 margin in rebounds, pulling down 75 boards, five short of the team single game record. All but one Blue Devil had at least two boards. Freshman
Maygan Mitchell came off the bench to grab eight rebounds and collected a collegiate-best 12 points. Stout raced off to an 8-0 start just over one minute into the game. The Blue Devils doubled up the Storm nine minutes into the game at 24-12 and had a 30 point, 52-22, lead with four minutes left in the first half. Stout's bench poured in 52 points, topping Crown's total.
Whitney Rawdon led Stout with 16 points.
Katelynne Folkers added 13 points and
Kayla Windt tossed in 12 points. The Storm's Judy Mundt led all scorers with 24 points, while teammate Michelle Hyde scored 20. Stout shot 46.6 percent (41-88) for the game, while the Storm shot 23.4 percent (15-64). The 106 points is only five points shy of the school record of 111 points set in a 111-69 win over St. Scholastica, Jan. 6, 2004, and the 55 point spread is seven points short of the school record 62 point margin set last year when Stout defeated Crown at Johnson Fieldhouse, 95-33. The last time Stout broke the 100-point mark was in a 103-45 win, Dec. 11, 2007. |
Story and Stats
SCOUTING #12 UW-WHITEWATER (3-2): After a 22-7 season a year ago, the Warhawks already have two losses in their first five games. The first loss, a 90-89 defeat, came at unranked Monmouth College's home tournament. More recently, Whitewater fell to 14th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Illinois. Don't take this Warhwarks team, lightly, however, as they did not start out hot last year, either. After opening their first 10 games at 6-4, Whitewater reeled off wins in 16 of their next 17 contests, earning them a place in the national tournament. This year's squad is led by Kaitlyn Thill and Courtney Kumerow, who are averaging 16.2 and 14.2 points per game, respectively. Kumerow leads the team with 6.6 rebounds per game, followed by Katie Burton, who is averaging 5.2 per contest. Thill, who already has 29 steals on the season, is a deep ball threat, making 54 percent of her three point attempts on the season. |

WHITEWATER'S LAST TIME OUT: In a battle of nationally-ranked teams, UW-Whitewater suffered a 72-69 loss to Illinois Wesleyan University on Tuesday. Entering the game ranked 14th, Whitewater relinquished a 35-30 halftime lead to the 17th-ranked Titans. Whitewater's Kaitlyn Thill led all players with 21 points and eight assists, but three Titans scored at least 17 points to give Illinois Wesleyan the edge. IWU shot 81 percent from the line, including 84 percent in the second half, which was the difference in the game as Whitewater shot just 70 percent for the game. | Story and Stats
THE SERIES: Whitewater leads the series 34-28, overall. The Warhawks have won nine of the last 10 meetings, including victories in the past five.
LAST TIME THEY MET: In their second meeting last season, UW-Whitewater defeated Stout, 72-55, January 21, 2012. The Warhawks broke a 12-all tie midway through the first half and never trailed again as they swept the season series. The young Blue Devils fell behind early, but overcame a seven-point deficit on a pair of free throws by Rachel Hanley, a bucket and a free throw by Nicki Alexander and a free throw by Whitney Rawdon. But that would be as close as the Blue Devils would get the rest of the night as the Warhawks went off on a 9-0 run to take a 21-12 lead at 6:59 of the first half. Whitewater took a 35-19 halftime lead, then came out of the locker room on a 12-3 run to take a 25-point, 47-22 lead at 16:50. The lead would stay in the upper 20s throughout the rest of the game. The Warhawks were led by Mary Merg with 20 points. Merg dropped in 5-of-9 shots from the floor, 3-of-5 from 3-point range and all seven of her free throw attempts. Cortney Kumerow tossed in 18 points and Chantel Burg pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Brea Boomer and Rawdon led Stout with 11 points each. Rawdon added six rebounds, while Boomer had four. Stout shot 34.5 percent from the field (20-58), 6.7 percent from 3-point range (1-15) and 58.3 percent (14-24) from the line. The Warhawks shot 47.2 percent (25-53) from the floor, 35.3 percent (6-17) from beyond the arc and 76.2 percent (16-21) from the line. Stout outrebounded the Warhawks, 36-33. | Story and Stats
TRADITION: In 10 of the last 13 seasons, Stout has been either the first or second leading scoring team in the WIAC. In the final team standings, Stout has finished no lower in the conference than fourth in 11 of the last 14 years. Last year broke the trend, however, as they finished second to last in scoring and eight out of nine teams in the conference standings with a final league record of 3-13.
JOHNSON FIELDHOUSE: The “cozy confines of Johnson Fieldhouse” has proven to be quite an advantage for the Blue Devils. Since the 2000-01 season, Stout has posted a 119-32 (.788) record at home. In conference games at Johnson Fieldhouse since 2000-01, Stout has a 73-24 (.726) record. Throw in the conference tournament games, and Stout has an 87-24 (.784) overall record against WIAC opponents at home.
THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Mark Thomas (425-247) is in his 26th year as the coach of the Blue Devils. Thomas has led his teams to 10 national playoff berths, nine times in the NCAA. A six-time WIAC coach of the year, the Blue Devils have won five conference titles and four conference tournament championships. His teams have twice been to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Thomas is the first WIAC coach to have reached 400 career wins. Thomas also has the most wins of any Stout basketball coach, either men's or women's. Dwain Mintz coached the men's basketball program for 27 years and compiled a 385-280 record. |
UW-Whitewater: Keri Carollo is in her 10th season as the Warhawks' head coach. In that time, she has guided her squad to two WIAC Championships and has currently led her team to five consecutive national tournaments. In her fifth year as head coach, Carollo coached the Warhawks to their best season in school history, advancing all the way to the NCAA Division III Final Four. Carollo, who was on Stout's coaching staff from 1999-2002, is 184-97 in her nine-plus years at Whitewater.
THE ROAD TO 400 WINS:
Mark Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, which had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. The wins came more often after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005. Thomas' 400th win came at UW-Stevens Point, a 90-76 decision, Feb. 3, 2010.
