UW-Stout 17, Hamline 8 (6 inn)
ST. PAUL, Minn (May 4, 2011) - After dropping a tight 5-3 opening game decision at Hamline University, UW-Stout had a "sweet" ending to their season as designated player
Hannah Sweet (Fr, Elk River, Minn) provided an offensive boost as the Blue Devils downed the Pipers, 17-8, in the bottom half of the doubleheader Wednesday.
Sweet tied a school record by driving in seven runs while going 3-for-5 was a triple short of hitting for the cycle with a single, double and and home run.
Sweet helped Stout take a 2-0 lead in the first inning, driving in a run with a single. But the Pipers came back to carry a 3-2 lead into the fourth inning when Stout went to work, scoring five runs in the inning.
Pitcher
Brittany Reiter (Fr, Eau Claire), who pitched five innings in relief to get the win, drew a bases loaded walk for Stout's first run of the inning.
Alison Gray (So, St. Cloud, Minn) and
Sammy Peterson (Jr, Hudson) had back-to-back RBI singles and Sweet followed up with a two-run double.
But Hamline answered back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on Heidi Larson's home run to trail 7-6.
Talk about answering back as Stout countered with a seven-run fifth inning.
Jessica Behnke (Fr, Bruce) led off with a triple, then came home on
Kelly Conway's (Sr, LaCrescent, Minn) RBI single. Reiter and Peterson each drove in the run before Sweet stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared the basepaths with a home run to left center to give Stout a 14-6 lead. While Stout did not score again in the inning, Behnke rapped out her second hit of the inning, a single up the middle.
Hamline took advantage of a pair of errors in the bottom of the fifth to score two runs for their final runs of the game.
Reiter, Gray and Peterson each drove a in a run in the sixth inning to extend the lead to nine runs, and
Steph Kilps (Fr, New Berlin) pitched the bottom of the sixth inning, allowing one hit.
Stout pounded out 15 hits and scored a season-high 17 runs. Sweet tied a record of seven RBI in a game set by Erin O'Connell during the 2003 season. Peterson and Reiter each had three RBI, while Gray had two.
In the opener, the lead went back-and-forth throughout the game until Hamline took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the sixth inning for the final score.
Jess Nicol (So, Eau Claire) started the game, striking out five, but did not figure into the decision.
