Stout on short end of slugfest, pitchers' duel

Hamline 11, Stout 8 | Hamline 1, Stout 0 (12 inn)

ST. PAUL, Minn (May 3, 2011) - UW-Stout found themselves on the short end of two opposite types of game as they lost a pair at Hamline University, 11-8, 1-0, Tuesday at Midway Stadium.

After the two teams used a combined seven pitchers in the first game, both starting pitchers went the distance to finish the game.

Tyler Hamann (So, Marathon) went the distance, recording seven strikeouts and pitched a four-hit gem before giving up the winning run in the bottom of the 12th when the Pipers' Ryan Hackel drove in the winning run with a two-out single to right field.

The Pipers' Casey Benford struck out three and walked only one to get the marathon win. The Blue Devil got to Benford for eight hits, stranding six.

In the opener, Stout used three pitchers and the Pipers send four to the mound.

As hard as runs were to come by in the nightcap (literally, the doubleheader started at 3 p.m. and finally ended at 8:31 p.m.), they came by the bucket-load in the opener.

Stout took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and one in the third, but Hamline took the lead with a four-run third.  Stout answered back with three runs in the fourth. Hamline tied the game in the fourth with two runs, and Stout grabbed the lead back in the fifth, but the Pipers captured the lead for good with a three-run fifth and added two more in the sixth.

Stout tallied 13 hits, while Hamline recorded 12. Eight different players recorded nine doubles.

Brian Giebel (Sr, River Falls), Jesse Brockman (So, Wrightstown), Matt Guida (So, Hawley, Minn) and Ben Yaucher (Jr, Janesville) each had two hits for Stout. Hackel had three hits for Hamline and Andy Powell, Andy King and J.D. Modrynski each had two hits for Hamline.

Stout will close out the season when they travel to UW-Stevens Point, Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7.
