MENOMONIE (April 9, 2011) -
Cory Hedeen (Jr, Cannon Falls, Minn) went the distance and allowed no earned runs as UW-Stout defeated UW-Platteville, 8-2, in the first game of a conference doubleheader. The Pioneers came back to win the second game, 10-6.
Hedeen did not allow a run until the ninth inning, as he finished a complete game, seven-hitter while striking out six Platteville (3-13, 2-5 WIAC) batters.
Matt Guida (So, Hawley, Minn.) put Stout (5-11, 2-5 WIAC) on the board in the first inning when he drove in
Brian Giebel (Sr, River Falls), who led the inning off with a double. In the second inning, Giebel homered following RBI's by
Jon Schoch (Jr, Chippewa Falls) and
Jesse Brockman (So, Eau Claire) to give Stout a 4-0 lead.
In the seventh inning, Guida again drove in Stout baserunners, this time recording a two-RBI double. Guida finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and a walk. Giebel and
Ben Yaucher (So, Janesville) both finished 3-for-5, combining for three RBI and three runs.
In the second game of the afternoon, Stout fell into a hole early and nearly put together a comeback effort. After a two-run opening inning for Platteville, the Blue Devils answered with a run of their own in the first. However, the Pioneers extended their lead to 6-1 after four innings and added another run in the top of the fifth.
Stout began rallying in the bottom of the seventh. After Schoch singled and stole second base, Brockman drove him in with a double, and later scored on a Giebel single to left field. Brandon O'Connell (Sr, Elk Mound) also drove in a run to cap off a three-run inning, pulling within three runs of the Pioneers.
Platteville bounced back in the top of the eighth by scoring three runs with two outs to grab an insurmountable 10-4 lead. Davis Lenzen picked up the win for Platteville, going six and two-thirds innings, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs.
Zach Kiminski (Fr, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) took the loss after allowing five earned runs in just three and two-thirds innings.
Carter Vogt (So, Buffalo, Minn.) pitched three innings without allowing an earned run, while striking out three batters.
Guida finished the day a combined 5-for-8 with five RBI, while Giebel collected seven hits in 10 at bats, while scoring five runs and driving in three.
Stout is scheduled to host UW-Platteville again, tomorrow, April 10, in another double header starting at noon.
