Stout brings out big bats in win over Eagles

UW-Stout 10, UW-La Crosse 4 | UW-La Crosse 14, UW-Stout 2 (7 inn)

LA CROSSE (April 3, 2011) - UW-Stout had their biggest offensive output of the season, rolling to a 10-4 first game win at UW-La Crosse Sunday. But La Crosse came back for a seven inning, 14-2, second game win.

The Blue Devils (4-10, 1-3) broke open a scoreless contest with a five run fourth inning, highlighted by Matt Guida's (So, Hawley, Minn) two run double, an RBI double by Jon Schoch (Jr, Chippewa Falls) and an infield RBI single by Jake Duske (Jr, Montrose, Minn).

Stout added another run in the sixth inning when Duske drove in Schoch with a single to right field. The Eagles (11-4, 3-1) got on the board with a run in the seventh inning.

The Blue Devils tacked on three more runs in the eighth as Duske and Brian Giebel (Sr, River Falls) each drove in a run. Geibel's  RBI came on a triple.

The Eagles only got to starter Dan Britts (So, Nekoosa) in the eighth inning with a lead off home run, then got two runners on base before Britts was retired for the day,  Britts scattered eight runs and gave up four earned runs, but struck out six and walked only two in seven-plus innings to garner the first win of his college career.

Duske, batting in the ninth position, was 4-for-4 with three runs batted in. Guida matched Duske with three RBI and went 3-for-5 in a season that has seen him rise to the top as Stout's leading hitter, finishing the day with a season average of .441.

Stout pounded out 14 hits on the day - the highest total of the season - and collected a season high 10 runs as eight of the nine starters recorded at least one hit. The Blue Devil defense did their part, turning three double plays.

The second game proved to be not as productive for the Blue Devils, who stayed within striking range and trailed only 3-2 heading into the fifth inning when LaCrosse exploded for eight runs. All eight runs came with two outs in the inning as the Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate.  Jay Fanta and Adam Cordova each drove in a pair of runs with an outfield single.

The Eagles added three more runs in the sixth on Matt Johnson's three-run home run and finished the game with 13 hits to Stout's seven.

La Crosse scored in the first, but Stout tied the score in the third when Giebel hit a solo home run to centerfield. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third and Stout tied the score in the fourth when Jesse Brockman (So, Wrightstown) drove in Guida, who had reached on a one-out single. La Crosse took the lead back for good when Johnson hit an RBI double.

Guida was 2-for-3 for Stout in the second game and finished the day at 5-for-8.

Stout is scheduled to host UW-Platteville, Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10. Both days are scheduled to get underway at noon.
