Stout plays comeback ball but splits with Titans

MENOMONIE (April 21, 2011) - UW-Stout mounted a pair of comebacks, but wound up splitting the first day of games with UW-Oshkosh, winning the first, 7-6, then falling, 7-6 in the second game to the Titans Thursday at Nelson Field.

Jon Schoch's (Jr, Chippewa Falls) two-run single to right field in the bottom of the ninth capped off a four-run effort to win win the first game.

Trailing 7-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth of game two, the Blue Devils (10-16, 5-9) put together another four run inning as Schoch had another RBI single to keep Stout alive.  But it wouldn't be quite enough as the Titans (18-6, 7-5) held on to carry the 7-6 win.

In the ninth inning of the opener, Jake Duske (Jr, Montrose, Minn) was hit by a pitch and Brian Giebel (Sr, River Falls) reached safely after catcher's interference was called. Jesse Brockman (So, Wrightstown) legged out a bunt single to load the bases. Greg Smolinski's (Sr, Menasha) fielder's choice brought home Duske. Brandon O'Connell (Sr, Elk Mound), who today was named the NCBWA Division III player of the week, reached on a single, moving Smolinski to second. Jeff Huth (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) came on to run for Smolinski. Huth and O'Connell advanced on a wild pitch. Following a strikeout, Ben Yaucher (Jr, Janesville) loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch, setting the table for Schoch's game-winning hit.

Stout opened the scoring in the game when Smolinski hit a two-run home run to center field in the first inning. Oshkosh took the lead back in the second innign when Jake Dostalek drove in a run and Nolan Fadness doubled in two runs. Doug Beattie drove in a single run in the third and the Titans led 4-0 until the seventh inning when Smolinski drove in his third run of the day, this time on a double down the left field line.

Oshkosh countered with runs in the eighth and ninth for the 7-2 lead.

Smolinski was 3-for-4 with four RBI. Schoch was 2-for-5. Dostalek led Oshkosh, going 3-for-5 before leaving the game with an injury in the ninth innig. Tyler Kamps, Derek Hirosky and Derek Layton each had two hits.

John Ewald (Fr, Maplewood, Minn) picked up the win in relief, facing five batters and allowing one run in the ninth inning. Chris Lammert (Jr, Merrill) worked eight inning, allowing five runs. Starter Phil Schreiber was saddled with the loss, striking out four and allowing seven runs, six earned.

In the nightcap, the Titans built a 3-0 lead on a RBI double by Hiroskey in the first inning and a RBI groundout by Fadness and Beattie scored on a wild pitch.

Stout cut the lead to 3-1 when Duske drove in Schoch with a single through the left side. The 17th ranked Titans answered back with three runs in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Bobby Kachel and a two run single by Tyler Kamps.

Smolinski drove in a run in the fifth and Oshkosh added a run in the eighth on an RBI double by Fadness.

The Blue Devils stormed back in the ninth. Duske opened the inning with a single to center field. Giebel reached on a fielders' choice when Duske was safe at second on a throwing error.  Duske moved to third on a wild pitch, then came home on a Smolinski single to left field. O'Connell drove home Giebel and Smolinski came home on Matt Guida's (So, Hawley, Minn) left field single. Following an infield lineout and a pitching change, Schoch singled to left field to bring in O'Connell, but the inning ended on a ground out.

Smolinski was 1-for-3 but finished with two RBI. Schoch was 4-for-5 in the game, while Guida was 2-for-5. Duske was 2-for-2 and scored a pair of runs.

Fadness was 2-for-5 for Oshkosh with two RBI, while Kamps was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Kachel went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

The Titans' Matt Wells took the win, pitching 8.2 inning, giving up six runs, but three earned. Troy Mrkvicka earned the save. Carter Vogt (So, Buffalo, Minn) absorbed the loss with eight innings of work, striking out four. Tyler Gray (Sr, Eau Claire) faced four batters in a scoreless ninth inning.

Smolinski finished the day six RBI, going 4-for-7 with a home run, double and a pair of singles.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again Friday, April 22, in Stout's final home games of the season. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
