LA CROSSE (April 2, 2011) - UW-La Crosse moved ahead of UW-Stout in the first game, then held off the Blue Devils in the second game to earn a sweep over Stout, 9-4, 5-4, in the WIAC openers for both teams Saturday.
In game two, La Crosse (10-3, 2-0) picked their way to 4-0 lead before Stout (3-9, 0-2) scored three runs in the sixth inning.
Jon Schoch (Jr, Chippewa Falls) drove in a run,
Matt Guida (So, Hawley, Minn) scored on a wild pitch and
Jake Duske (Jr, Montrose, Minn) drove in a run on a sacfice fly to pull Stout to within 4-3. The Eagles took a 5-3 lead when Jay Fanta was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh.
Stout pulled to within one run in the top of the ninth when Guida scored his second run of the game, but the Blue Devils bowed out with the bases loaded.
Guida led Stout, going 2-for-4. Duske had a pair of RBI. The Eagles got two hits each from Matt Trocke, Zach Harazin and Adam Cordova.
Zach Kiminski (Fr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) got the loss for the Blue Devils, going six innings, giving up eight hits and four earned runs. Mitch Running earned the Eagles' win, going eight innings and giving up four hits.
In game one, UW-Stout surrendered five unearned runs and lost, 9-4, to UW-La Crosse.
But it was Stout that took advantage of La Crosse miscues early to take a 3-0 first inning lead. The Blue Devils drew three walks and used an Eagle error to jump out first. The Eagles answered back in the bottom of the inning with a single run, they took a 5-3 lead in the fourth inning, keyed by Brooks Braga solo home run.
Stout pulled to within one run when
Brian Giebel (Sr, River Falls), who went 3-for-5 in the game, drove in a run with a single to center field, scoring
Ben Yaucher (So, Janesville), who reached with a lead off single. The Eagles took the game back with a pair of runs in the fifth and solo runs in the sixth and eighth innings.
Cory Hedeen (Jr, Cannon Falls, Minn) took the loss for Stout, going 4.2 innings, surrendering seven runs, but only two earned. Bryant Rude went the distant for the Eagles, scattering eight hits and giving up no walks after allowing the three in the first inning.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday, April 3 at noon.
