Warhawks take a pair of ball games from Stout

MENOMONIE (April 18, 2011) - UW-Whitewater took first inning leads in both games and went on to sweep UW-Stout, 11-5, 9-5, Monday at Nelson Field.

After spotting the 14th-ranked Warhawks (18-5, 11-3)  three runs in the first inning of the second game, the Blue Devils (9-15, 4-8) came back to knot the game in the bottom of the inning. Brian Giebel (Sr, River Falls) opened with a double and Jesse Brockman (So, Wrightstown) got on after getting hit by a pitch. Designated hitter flew out to center field to move both runners. Brandon O'Connell (Sr, Elk Mound) scored Geibel on a fielder's choice. Matt Guida (So, Hawley, Minn) doubled to left field to score O'Connell and Jon Schoch (Jr, Chippewa Falls) singled down the left field line to push home Guida.

The Warhawks took the lead back in the third inningwith a pair of runs, then chipped their way to a 8-3 lead into the fifth inning when Stout scored a pair of runs when Greg Smolinski (Sr, Menasha) drove in two runs on a single up the middle. The Warhawks tagged on another run in the sixth inning.

Designated hitter Samuel Keller had three hits and a pair of RBI to lead Whitewater. Daniel Putnam, Rob Coe and Jeff Donovan each recorded two hits. Three Warhawk pitched combined for nine strikeouts. Giebel, Guida and Schoch each were 2-for-4 in the game for Stout..

In the opener, the Warhawks put four on the board in the first inning. Stout scored in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 4-1. The Warhawks stretched the lead to 7-1 in the third.

The middle innings were quiet unitl Whitewater scored twice in the seventh inning. Stout  rolled out three runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 9-4. Stout took advantage of two Whitewater errors in the inning and Josh Anderson (Sr, Osseo) drove in a run. Whitewater added two runs in the ninth and the Blue Devils threatened in the bottom of the ninth when Anderson had his second RBI of the game, but Stout ran out of time.

Giebel was 3-for-4 in the game, while Anderson and Brockman each had a pair of hits for Stout. Putnam led Whitewater, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Andrew Eichstaedt was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Donovan and Dylan Friend each had two hits.

Giebel finished the day going 5-for-8 with three runs scored.

Stout is scheduled to host UW-Oshkosh, Thursday, April 21 and Friday, April 22 in their final home games of the year.
