MENOMONIE (April 13, 2011) - Brandon O'Connell's (Sr, Elk Mound) game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave UW-Stout an unlikely looking sweep over Viterbo University as the Blue Devils captured non-conference wins of 12-8 and 14-13 at Nelson Field Wednesday.
O'Connell's single just past a diving V-Hawk second baseman sent pinch runner
Jeff Huth (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) scampering home and gave Stout (8-12) their only lead of the second game.
The Blue Devils trailed 13-7 in the seventh inning after the V-Hawks' Blake Shepherd hit a solo home run off eventual winner
Dylan DeMotts (Fr, Woodville). DeMotts went on force two fly outs to get out of the inning, setting the stage for his first collegiate win.
O'Connell opened the seventh with a single down left field line.
Jon Schoch (Jr, Chippewa Falls) moved O'Connell to second with a single.
Matt Paulsrud (Fr, Stoddard) loaded the bases by getting on with an error.
Freshman
Brandon Hitter (Fr, Appleton) delivered a two-run single. Following an out,
Brian Giebel (Sr, River Falls) drew a walk to reload the bases.
Jake Duske (Jr, Montrose, Minn) drove in two runs with a double to left field.
Greg Smolinski (Sr, Menasha) stayed alive when the first baseman over threw the pitcher covering first, scoring Duske and Giebel, setting the stage for O'Connell. Huth just got past the tag on his steal and O'Connell brought him home.
O'Connell, who entered the game in a slump of sorts, was 3-for-4 in the second game and 2-for-2 in the opener, finishing the night at 5-for-6 with four RBI. Smolinski and Hitter each had a three RBI in the game.
Viterbo took an early 10-0 lead before Stout cut the lead to three with a seven run third inning. The V-Hawks added solo runs inthe fourth, sixth and seventh innings.
In the opener, the game was knotted at 3 apiece before Viterbo put five runs on the board in the fourth inning. Stout countered with a nine-run fifth inning, as O'Connell scored twice in the inning. He first got on base after getting hit by a pitch, and eventually scored on Schoch's single. O'Connell hit a two-run shot to left field in his second at-bat in the inning for what would prove to be the final score.
Carter Vogt (So, Buffalo, Minn) came on in relief to pick up the win, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing only two hits and no runs.
Schoch had three RBI in the game, hitting a two run home run in the third innings.
Stout is scheduled to host UW-Whitewater, Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17, with the first game slated to begin at noon both days.
