MENOMONIE, Wis. (April 10, 2011) - After scoring 10 runs on 13 hits in the opening game of the doubleheader to win, 10-8, Stout was only able to produce five runs on the same number of hits in the following game, falling 12-5 to UW-Platteville, Sunday afternoon at Nelson Field.
The Blue Devils (6-12, 3-5 WIAC) struck first in what was a high scoring affair in the first game. After a single,
Ben Yaucher (So, Janesville) advanced to second on a Brandon O'Connell (Sr, Elk Mound) walk, then moved to third and home on a wild pitch and a passed ball to put Stout on the board.
Jon Schoch (Jr, Chippewa Falls) got the scoring started early in the second with a triple to right field, driving in
AJ Yusten (Jr, Zumbrota, Minn.), who had walked. Schoch then scored on a
Matt Paulsrud (Fr, Stoddard) groundout.
After Yusten and Schoch each drove in a run in the third inning, Yaucher started the scoring with an RBI in the fourth, followed by a
Matt Guida (So, Hawley, Minn.) two-run double. The Blue Devils added a run in each of the fifth and seventh inning, and
John Ewald (Fr, Maplewood, Minn.) came in to mop up the save.
Dan Britts (So, Nekoosa) collected the first game win, going five innings, striking out seven Platteville (4-14, 3-5) batters and allowing four earned runs.
Guida and Schoch led the offensive effort in the second game, but it was not nearly enough to compete with Platteville's assault. The Pioneers ended the game with 18 hits, sending 43 batters to the plate. The game also featured a 40-minute rain delay that included strong winds, heavy rain and lightning during the sixth inning.
This time, Platteville jumped out to the first lead by scoring three runs in the top of the third inning. They added two more in the fourth, but Stout matched their two runs in the bottom of the inning on a Paulsrud single to right field, driving in
Jake Duske (Jr, Montrose, Minn.) and Guida.
The Pioneers added four more in the sixthk followed by a lone run in the seventh, giving them a 10-2 lead fresh off the rain delay. When Guida homered in the bottom of the seventh, he cut the lead to 10-4, but Stout could not complete the comeback.
Guida, who finished the day 6-for-8, went 4-for-4 in the second game, including two doubles and a home run and three RBI's. He is now hitting .520 on the season and leads the team with 10 doubles. Schoch filled up the stat sheet on the afternoon, finishing the day 5-for-8, including two runs, two RBI's, two doubles, a triple and a stolen base.
Stout will return to action next when they play host to Viterbo University this Wednesday, April 13th at Nelson Field.
