St. John's 9, Stout 8
PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 14, 2011) - Stout grabbed an early lead in each of their games against St. John's University today, but failed to capture their first win of the season, as they dropped the first game 7-1, followed by a 9-8 loss in the second.
Stout (0-4) grabbed the first lead of the early contest when Brandon O'Connell (Sr, Elk Mound) drove in Stout's only run of the game on a triple down the right field line. O'Connell, following up a solid performance yesterday, finished the games a combined 4-6 with two RBI. St. John's (2-0) rallied to take a 5-1 lead by the end of the third and added runs in the fourth and fifth innings as well to take the first game in seven innings.
In the second game, Stout came out hot at the plate, piling up all eight of their runs in the first three innings. O'Connell drove in the first Stout run of the game, and
Josh Anderson tied up the score at two runs apiece after the first inning.
Brian Giebel (Sr, River Falls) hit a two-RBI triple in the second inning, followed by an RBI single by
Ben Yaucher (So, Janesville) to grab the Blue Devils a 5-2 lead after two.
Stout then extended their lead to six runs after
Jake Duske (Jr, Montrose, Minn.) and Giebel knocked in runs in the third inning. The Johnnies were able to rally, however, scoring three runs in the fourth, and four in the fifth to take a 9-8 lead that would not be relinquished. St. John's used a different pitcher in each of the last three innings, and Max Forster was credited with the save.
Stout will look to get that elusive first win when they face Minot State University out of North Dakota, Wednesday, March 16th in Phoenix. Tomorrow, Stout will enjoy their only day off of their spring break trip.
