MENOMONIE (May 9, 2010) - UW-Stout rebounded nicely after a 13-6 loss in the first of two games by defeating UW-Stevens Point, 5-3 in their final WIAC game of the season, Sunday afternoon at Nelson Field.
The Pointers (27-13, 16-8 WIAC) built up a 7-0 lead before Stout (11-26, 6-18) knocked the goose egg off the scoreboard with a single run on a
Jon Schoch (So, Chippewa Falls) double in the seventh inning
But Stevens Point answered back in a big way in the top of the eighth inning with six runs, highlighted by a two-out, three-run home run by Jared Surman to take a 13-1 lead.
The Blue Devils fired up a never-say-die attitude, and combined that with a Pointer miscue in the outfield to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth and run the game into the ninth inning.
Jake Duske (So, Montrose, Minn) tripled in a pair of runs and
AJ Yusten (So, Zumbrota, Minn) drove in a run with a groundout.
Schoch led off the ninth inning with a solo home run and pinch hitter
Matt Guida (Fr, Hawley, Minn) drove in a run with a single up the middle for the final run of the game.
Sam Spurney was 4-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Pointers' 17-hit attack. Surman was 3-for-5 with four RBI and Justin Jirschle was 3-for-5.
Schoch was 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead Stout.
Brian Giebel (Jr, River Falls) was 2-for-4. Stout finished the game with nine hits.
The Blue Devils struck first in the second matchup of the day when Duske and Schoch scored on
Drew Anderson's (Sr, Whitehall) double and
Chris Sill's (Fr, Wabasha, Minn.) sacrifice fly, respectively.
Stevens Point answered with one run in the top of the third inning, and took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the fourth.
Duske then led off the sixth inning with a double, which drew a new pitcher from the Pointer bullpen. Anderson knocked Duske in on a ground out one batter later to knot the game at 3 runs apiece.
Luke Merritt (Fr, Eau Claire) and Giebel each got RBI singles to put Stout on top, 5-3.
Stout's pitchers,
Chris Lammert (So, Merrill) and
Tyler Hamann (Fr, Marathon), combined to allow only four hits. Hamann gave up one hit in three innings, and struck out two batters. Lammert pitched six shutout innings in relief, as he walked one and struck out one.
Stout is scheduled to finish their season, Tuesday, May 11th, when they host Northland college in a non-conference doubleheader. The first game will begin at 1 p.m.
