MENOMONIE (May 8, 2010) -
AJ Yusten (So, Zumbrota, Minn) did all he could to put UW-Stout back into the game, but the Blue Devils were tripped up by UW-Stevens Point, 10-8 in the first game and blanked, 10-0 in the second at Nelson Field.
In the first contest of the doubleheader, the Pointers (26-11, 15-7 WIAC) had built a 10-0 lead after six innings. In the bottom of the inning, Yusten staved off elimination from the 10-run mercy rule when he sent his first home run of the afternoon to right field, this one a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth.
After scoreless seventh and eighth innings, Stout (10-25, 5-17) showed offensive life again in the bottom of the ninth.
Jon Schoch (So, Chippewa Falls) led off the inning with a single, and
Chris Sill (Fr, Wabasha, Minn) reached base when he was hit by a pitch.
Jesse Brockman (Fr, Wrightstown) brought the pair home with a double to center field to pull Stout to within 10-4.
With two outs,
Ryan Gilbertson (Sr, River Falls) drew a walk. Brockman and Gilbertson advanced on a wild pitch and
Jake Duske (So, Montrose, Minn) set the stage for Yusten when he drew a walk.
The Pointers scored twice in the fourth inning, then added four runs in the fifth, keyed by Justin Jirschle's two-run double. The Pointers added four more runs in the sixth inning, aided by two Stout errors.
In the second game, the Blue Devils failed to get any offense going against Stevens Point's left-hander, Joel Delorit.
Brian Giebel (Jr, River Falls) reached base on a leadoff single in the first, but was thrown out on a double play just one batter later.
Stout's only other hit came from Sill in the sixth inning. Delorit faced two over the minimum number of batters, striking out 11 in eight complete innings of work.
In contrast to the first game, much of Stevens Point's production came from the bottom of their order instead of their first through fourth hitters, as in the first game. Point's bottom three hitters accounted for five RBI and six runs.
Stout will return to Nelson Field on Sunday, May 9th, for another doubleheader against the Pointers. The first game is scheduled to start at noon.
