OSHKOSH (May 2, 2010) - Enough was simply enough.
After getting into another situation where the game is determined by one run, UW-Stout defeated UW-Oshkosh, 9-6 in 10 innings, in the second game of a WIAC doubleheader Sunday. In the opener, an eight run fifth inning was not quite enough as lost 12-11.
In the nightcap, the Blue Devils (10-23, 5-15) held a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Titans (15-19, 8-12) tied the score on an RBI single by Tyler Kamps.
Stout took the 10th inning into their own hands, or actually, allowed Oshkosh to play the ball and the Titans committed two errors that set the table for the five-run inning.
Chris Sill (Fr, Wabasha, Minn) and
Brian Giebel (Jr, River Falls) both drove in a run, then
Jake Duske (So, Montrose, Minn) delivered the big blow with a three-run home run, Duske's second home run of the day.
But the Titans refused to go away, rallying to score two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning and
Matt Phipps (Jr, Manitowoc) picked up his first win of the season, pitching the final five innings.
The win snapped a 10-game losing streak and also took the Blue Devils out of potentially 14th one-run game of the season. Stout is 4-9 this season in one-run games.
Oshkosh took the early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Stout bounced back with two runs in the second inning as
AJ Yusten (So, Zumbrota, Minn) scored on a wild pitch and
Adam Stuessel (Jr, River Falls) gave himself up with a sacrifice fly.
The Titans took the lead back with two runs in the fourth as Derek Layton hit a two-run double. Duske drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth and Sill collected another RBI in the sixth to give Stout the 4-3 lead.
Duske, Giebel, Stuessel and Sill each had two hits, with Duske collecting four RBI and Sill, two. Blake Berger and Lucas Wirth each had two hits for Oshkosh.
In the first game, Stout overcame a 10-2 deficit with an eight-run fifth inning to knot the game at 10-all.
Chris Sil (Fr, Wabasha, Minn) hit a three-run home run to highlight the inning for Stout. The hit was Sill's first career home run and his second hit of the game.#
AJ Yusten# (So, Zumbrota, Minn) laced a three-run double in the inning and
Adam Stuessel (Sr, River Falls) and
Jon Schoch (So, Chippewa Falls) each drove in a run.
Oshkosh took the lead back in the sixth inning, but Stout tied the score on a solo home run by
Jake Duske (So, Montrose, Minn) in the eighth. The Titans' Mickey Fadness hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth for the game winner.
Stout scored single runs in the first two innings on RBIs by
Josh Anderson (So, Osseo) and Sill, but the Titans were able to counter with two runs in the first inning, four runs in the second, one run in the third and three in the fourth on a three-run home run by Lucas Wirth.
Stout finished the game with 14 hits, while Oshkosh slashed 13 hits. Sill finished the game going 3-for-5 with four RBI.
Brian Giebel (Jr, River Falls) was 3-for-5, Stuessel 2-for-5 and Schoch 2-for-4. Fadness was 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Titans.
Sill had a solid day at the plate for the Blue Devils, going 5-for-9 with six RBI on the day, making his second and third starts of his career, but his first collegiate starts at first base.
Stout will close the WIAC season when they host UW-Stevens Point, Friday, May 7 at 1 p.m. and again Saturday, May 8 at noon. Stout will close out the regular season with a non-conference contest Tuesday, May 11 by hosting Northland College at 1 p.m.
