MENOMONIE (May 12, 2010) - Northland College employed solid pitching in both games of Stout's season-ending doubleheader, as the Blue Devils lost, 7-3, in the first contest, followed by a 5-1 loss in the second, Wednesday afternoon at Nelson Field.
The Lumberjacks (12-27) rolled up five runs in the fifth inning of the first game to jump out to a 7-0 lead as they ground through three Stout (11-28) pitchers in the inning. Northland took advantage of a Stout error and also stroked out four hits in the inning. Throughout the game, the Lumberjacks laid down sacrifice bunts to make players.
Stout did pick up a couple of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single by
Josh Anderson (So, Osseo) and a sacrifice fly by
AJ Yusten (So, Zumbrota, Minn). Stout added a third run in the bottom of the seventh on a single by
Jesse Brockman (Fr, Wrightstown).
In the second game, Northland grabbed their lead in the first inning and never gave it up. Leading, 3-0, in the fourth inning, Northland's pitcher Bryce Szymanski surrendered his first run when
Drew Anderson (Sr , Whitehall) drove in
Matt Guida (Fr, Hawley, Minn.), who walked earlier in the inning.
The Blue Devils were only able to get three hits in the second contest, while Northland had six hits, totaling 17 on the evening.
Dan Britts (Fr, Nekoosa) started the game on the mound for the Blue Devils, striking out six batters in five innings of work, allowing just one earned run.
Also worth noting, two of Stout's senior pitchers,
Nate Hanson (Sr, Bloomington, Minn.) and
Russ Jiskra (Sr, Hudson) each got an at-bat in the seventh inning of the second game as a conclusion to their UW-Stout careers. Jiskra, the last batter of the game, got hold of a pitch and sent the ball to the centerfield warning track.
