OSHKOSH (May 1, 2010) - These types of games will make the youngest baseball coach in the WIAC age quickly.
UW-Stout seems to be in a rash of games lately that come down to the final inning and Saturday's games were no exception as Blue Devil coach Seth Maier may have picked up a couple of gray hairs. UW-Oshkosh scored in the bottom of the ninth inning in both games to earn the first day sweep in the four-game series. Oshkosh won the first game, 7-6, and the second game, 5-4.
In the first game, Nolan Fadness's batted ball was misplayed in the infieid, allowing Lucas Wirth to score the winning run. In the second game, the Titans (14-18, 7-11) loaded the bases and drew a game-winning walk.
Nate Hanson (Sr, Bloomington, Minn) went the distance for the Blue Devils(9-22, 4-14), giving up only one earned run as he struck out three, allowed walk and scattered 13 hits throughout the game.
After Stout took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by
Ryan Gilbertson (Sr, River Falls), the Titans slugged out a four run first inning, capped off by a two-run home run by Tyler Kamps.
The teams traded single runs in each of the third and fifth innings before Stout tied the game with a three-run sixth inning.
Jake Duske (Fr, Montrose, Minn),
Brian Giebel (Jr, River Falls) and
Jesse Brockman (Fr, Wrightstown) each collected an RBI to contribute to the cause.
Hanson got in trouble in the bottom of the ninth. After getting the first two outs, Wirth wrapped a single, then moved to third on Derek Layton's single, before coming home on the error.
Giebel was 3-for-4 and
Josh Anderson (Jr, Osseo) was 3-for-5. Duske was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Stuessel finished at 2-for-4.
In the second game, Stout was held to two hits for the game, but scored four runs in the first inning as the Titans committed two errors and Stout drew four walks. The Titans chipped away at the lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, two runs in the seventh and the game-winning run in the ninth. The Titans had one hit, but were awarded three walks.
Stout will close out the series with the Titans, Sunday, May 2 at noon. Stout returns home Friday, May 7 to open a two-day series with UW-Stevens Point.
