UW-Platteville 21, UW-Stout 10 (7 inn)
PLATTEVILLE (April 24, 2010) - UW-Platteville won both sides of a conference doubleheader over UW-Stout, winning the first, 11-10, in 11 innings, then put Stout away in the second game with a 15-run fifth inning for a 21-10 win Saturday at Kendall Murray Field.
Platteville's Steve Bomkamp delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning to break a 10-10 deadlock and give UW-Stout the 11-10 loss in the first game.
The Pioneers' Joe Nartowicz opened the inning by reaching safely on an infield error, then stole second. Nartowicz advanced to third on Jason Jacobson's infield single.
Stout (9-16, 4-8) scored all of 10 their runs in the middle three innings, coming back from 3-0 deficit.
After Platteville (16-13, 6-10) scored three runs in the second inning on an Aaron Hopson home run and a two-run triple by Wade Axelson, Stout put up one run in the fourth inning when
Josh Anderson (So, Osseo) drove in
Jesse Brockman (Fr, Wrightstown), who led off the inning with a double.
The Pioneers pushed their lead to 5-1 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Stout took the lead with a five-run fifth inning, as
Jon Schoch (So, Chippewa Falls) scored on a wild pitch and
Josh Anderson delivered a two-run single and
Drew Anderson (Sr, Whitehall) drove in two runs with a double.
The Pioneers answered back with a four-run fifth inning on three-run home run by Jacobson and a solo home run by Axelson to take a 9-6 lead.
Stout grabbed the lead again with a four-run effort in the sixth inning.
Jake Duske (So, Montrose, MInn) hit a two-run home run, Brockman drove in a run with a triple and
Ryan Gilbertson's (Sr, River Falls) ground out ended Stout's scoring.
Jacobson came back to haunt the Blue Devils with an RBI triple in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.
Both teams had chances after nine innings. Stout stranded Duske at third in the 10th, and Platteville stranded a runner at second in the bottom half of the inning. The Blue Devils left the bases loaded in the 11th inning.
Josh Anderson finished the game 4-for-6 with three RBI.
The game was similar to a game played last season in Menomonie, where the Blue Devils pulled out a 9-8 win in 11 innings.
In the second game, the Pioneers sent 20 batters to the plate in the fifth inning on their way to a 15-run explosion. The Pioneers drew seven walks in the inning and one hit batter. The inning also had two home runs, a grand slam by Axelson and a three-run shot by Jacobson.
The game started out well for the Blue Devils, who took a 5-0 lead after the first inning, with Gilbertson, Schoch and
Drew Anderson each bringing in a run and
AJ Yusten (So, Zumbrota, Minn) driving in two runs with a triple. The Pioneers scored one run in the first, then nickel-and-dimed their way to a four-run second inning to tie the game.
Stout took an 8-5 lead in the fourth on RBIs by
Brian Giebel (Jr, River Falls), Gilbertson and
Josh Anderson before the bottom fell out in the fifth inning. Stout added two runs in the sixth inning on a two-run single by Yusten. Platteville added one more run in the bottom of the sixth and the game ended in seven innings.
For Platteville, Jacobson went 3-for-5 with five RBI, and Axelson went 2-for-5 with five RBI.
For Stout, Yusten was 2-for-4 with four RBI and Gilbertson was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Stout outhit Platteville, 14-13, but Stout pitchers issued 18 walks and one hit-by-pitch.
The teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday, April 25 at noon.
