SUPERIOR (April 21, 2010) - UW-Stout pitcher
Nate Hanson (Sr, Bloomington, Minn) took a batted ball to the ankle in the first game, knocking him down and seemingly out of the game. But Hanson bounced back up and pitched six innings to record the win in a 10-5 victory over UW-Superior Wednesday. The Yellowjackets came back in the second game to give Stout a 14-13 loss despite committing nine errors.
Hanson took the shot off his leg on the third batter of the afternoon, but came back to scatter 11 hits, four runs and struck out four to get his fourth win of the season.
#Brian Giebel (Jr, River Falls) got Stout started in the game, hitting a first-pitch home run. Stout (9-14, 4-6) followed up with three more runs in the inning to give Hanson a 4-0 lead. The Yellowjackets (12-12, 4-6), who out-hit Stout 15-13, added a pair of runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead in half. Stout added a run in the bottom half of the fifth when Giebel stole third, then came home on a throwing error on the play.
The 'Jackets Paul Schlangen hit a two-run home run in the sixth to tighten the score to 5-4. Stout added two in the seventh on a two-run home run by
Josh Anderson (So, Osseo), then put three on the board in the eight inning, two runs coming on a
Kyle Reich (Fr, Burlington) and another on a
Jesse Brockman (Fr, Wrightstown) single.
Chris Lammert (So, Merrill) recorded the save by allowing four hits and one run and struck out four.
The Yellowjackets stranded 13 runners in the opener.
In the second game, Stout stranded 14 runners, but Superior overcame their own troubles for the win.
Superior took a 2-0 lead in the third, but Stout swept that lead away with seven runs in the bottom of the third. Superior simply kept at it,scoring four in the fourth on a Sean Cummings grand slam.
Stout wasted not time, rolling up three runs int he fourth inning and another in the fifth to take an 11-6 lead. But Yellowjackets jumped into the lead, 13-11, with seven runs in the sixth.
Stout added a run in the eighth, Superior picked up a solo home run by Shaun Marshall in the ninth and the Blue Devils pulled to within one run when
Ryan Gilbertson (Sr, River Falls) led off the inning with a solo home run to right field.
The Blue Devils took advantage of a Superior catcher's interference call and another infield error to load the bases, but that is where the game ended.
Stout's Brockman had a strong day at the plate, going 3-of-6 with three RBI in the second game and 2-for-3 in the first game.
Stout will be at UW-Platteville, Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25.
