VERO BEACH, Fla. (March 24, 2010) - UW-Stout jumped all over Western Connecticut in the first inning of the first game and went on to a 9-7 win, but then lost their final game of their annual spring break trip, 13-5, Wednesday.
The Blue Devils (3-6) wasted little time scoring on the Colonials, scoring six runs in the first inning. The first six Stout players reached base safely, with the first five batters slashing singles. Stout sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning and sent the Colonial starting pitcher packing with only one out.
West Conn came back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Josh Anderson (So, Osseo) drove in a run in the top of the second for Stout. The Colonials pulled to within 7-4 with two more runs in the bottom of the third. Stout recorded three doubles in the fourth inning and got one run to take an 8-4 lead.
West Conn got a single run in the fifth, then got two runs in the sixth off reliever
Nate Hanson (Sr, Bloomington, Minn) to pull to within one run, 8-7. The Blue Devils added a run in the top of the seventh on a Jake Brockman (Fr, Wrightstown) single. Hanson shut the door in the bottom of the inning with a fly ball and two strikeouts to earn the save.
Anderson had a pair of RBIs and reached safely in all four trips to plate with two singles and two walks.
In the second game, Stout took an early lead when
Ryan Gilbertson (Sr, River Falls) plated Brian Gielbel (Jr, River Falls) on a sacrifice fly. The Colonials (3-4) racked up five runs in the second inning and, after Stout put a single run on the board in the bottom of the second, added two runs in each of the next three innings for an 11-2 lead.
Stout heads home where they will face Finlandia University, Saturday, April 3 at 1 p.m.
West Conn put up two more runs in the seventh inning, but Stout held a mini-rally in the bottom half as the bench drove in three runs with
Alex Burian (Jr, Eau Claire),
Clay Lanners (Fr, Monticello, Minn) and
Drew Anderson (Sr, Whitehall) each driving in a run. Stout was able to play 21 players in the contest.
