Augustana 7, UW-Stout 6 | Stout vs. Lawrence, cancelled
WINTER HAVEN, Fla (March 21, 2010) - UW-Stout hung tight with 24th ranked Augustana College, a team that had 10 games under their belt, as they dropped a 7-6 decision in the Blue Devils' first game Sunday on their annual spring break trip to Florida.
Stout's second game of the day with Lawrence University was cancelled due to rain and will not be made up.
The Blue Devils (1-2) came back from a 5-0 deficit to make a game of it, but could never get over the hump. The Vikings (11-0) scored four runs in the first inning and another in the third inning before Stout got on the board in the bottom of the third with a run when
Ryan Gilbertson (Sr, River Falls) drove in
Kyle Reich (Fr, Burlington), who had reached with an inning opening walk.
The Vikings tallied two more runs in the top of the fourth, getting their first seven runs against
Chris Lammert (So, Merrill), who was nearly flawless in his season opening appearance two weeks earlier.
Stout pulled to within 7-3 in the fourth inning when
Brian Giebel (Jr, River Falls) drove in two runs with a single to right. Stout kept up the rally when Brandon O'Connell (Jr, Elk Mound) drove in Gilbertson with his second triple of the season in the fifth inning and
Jon Schoch (So, Chippewa Falls) brought in O'Connell with a single to right field.
#Aaron Paiser (So, Leopolis)# was nearly flawless after he took over for Lammert, going four innings, allowing two hits and striking out five, but more importantly, shutting out the Vikings.
Josh Anderson (So, Osseo) pulled Stout to within one run with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Stout finished with 10 hits after being held without a hit for the first two innings. The Vikings scattered 12 hits, eight of those coming in the first four innings.
Giebel was 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead Stout. O'Connell and Anderson each had two hits and an RBI.
Stout is scheduled to play Allegheny College in a doubleheader, Monday, March 22.
