MENOMONIE (February 6, 2010) - The day belonged to
Julia Hirssig (Sr, Rochester, Minn).
The All-American forward became the UW-Stout all-time scoring leader and led the Blue Devils to an 82-62 win over UW-Oshkosh by scoring her seventh consecutive double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Hirssig needed three points to push her ahead of Julie Maki, who set the scoring record with 1620 points 17 years ago. Hirssig scored a bucket three minutes into the game to tie the record, then had to wait until nine minutes left in the first half to get the record breaker.
In the meantime, the Titans (7-15, 2-11) hung around for quite a while, taking a one point lead, 13-12, at 9:48.
Kim Stokke (Sr, Menomonie) put the Blue Devils (13-9, 8-5) ahead for good with a bucket seconds later and Hirssig's record-breaker gave Stout a 16-13 lead at 8:58. Stout went on to balloon the lead to as much as 13 points, 32-19, and the halftime score was 32-22.
The Titans stayed within eight or nine points through the first 10 minutes of the second half, but a free throw by Hirssig began a 9-0 run for a 61-45 lead and it was never closer after that with Stout moving up to as much as a 23 point lead with four minutes left in the game.
Hirssig shot 8-of-11 from the floor and drained 5-of-8 free throws. She also had two assists, one blocked shot and four steals. Hirssig now has 1639 career points.
Stokke finished with 16 points and
Danielle DeWitt (Sr, Green Bay) came off the bench to score 10 points.
Kimmy Keehr (Fr, Spring Valley) nailed three 3-point baskets - two in the first half - to finish with a career-best nine points.
The Titans were led by Katie Kitzke with 18 points. Ashely Winterfeldt had 10 points. Shelby Churchill had eight rebounds.
Stout will host UW-Superior, Wednesday, Feb. 10, then will head to UW-Platteville, Saturday, Feb. 13.
