STEVENS POINT (February 3, 2010) -
Mark Thomas won his 400th career game.
Julia Hirssig (Sr, Rochester, Minn) moved to within three points of breaking the UW-Stout all-time scoring record.
And, oh yeah, UW-Stout defeated first place UW-Stevens Point, 90-76, in Stevens Point Wednesday at Berg Gymnasium.
Stout (12-9, 7-5) never trailed in this game as
Megan Maslowski (Sr, Marshfield) scored the first points of the night, but it took nearly three minutes before the bucket came at 17:20 of the first half. Within less than six minutes, the Blue Devils held a 22-12 lead with just about everyone on the floor contributing to the lead.
The Pointers (17-4, 9-3) made periodic runs at the Blue Devils, getting as close as three points, 38-35, with 1:37 left in the first half. The would be as close Stevens Point would get and Stout held a 42-36 halftime lead.
Hirssig, who had 11 points at the half, finished with a game-high 27 points to move her career totals 1618 points. Guard Julie Maki, who played for Stout from 1989-93, scored 1620 during her All-American career. Hirssig also had 12 rebounds for her 11th double double of the season and her sixth consecutive double double. Hirssig was 11-of-17 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free throw line.
Stout got double digit scoring from five players.
Danielle DeWitt (Sr, Green Bay) finished with 20 points, hitting 7-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-7 from 3-point range for a new career-high.
Kim Stokke (Sr, Menomonie) scored 12 points and
Tricia VanVreede (Jr, Little Chute) and Maslowski each finished with 10 points.
Stout shot 51.7 percent (31-60) from the floor and 46.7 percent (7-15) from 3-point range. The 16th ranked Pointers shot 41.5 percent (27-65) from the floor.
The Pointers were led by Josi Schultz with 22 points. Andrea Flease contributed 16 points, Britta Peterson 16 and Cassie Bandow 10.
Thomas improved his career record to 400-210. Thomas' first collegiate win came the second game of his first season when his Blue Devils, who had won only two games over the previous two years, defeated Mt. Senario, 73-44, in November, 1987. It was all uphill after that. Thomas got his 50th win, Feb. 28, 1991, 71-60, over Cardinal Stritch. The 100th win came Jan. 10, 1994, an 80-59 win over UM-Morris. No. 200 came at UW-River Falls, a 78-74 victory on Jan. 5, 2000. Thomas' 300th win came in overtime, a 76-68 decision over UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 29, 2005.
Stout will host UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Feb. 6 at 5 p.m., then will host UW-Superior, Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m.
