ROSEMOUNT, Minn (February 16, 2010) - After giving up the lead in the first game and losing, 6-2, the UW-Stout softball team bounced back to take a 4-3 win over St. Scholastica in the season openers for both teams Tuesday at the Irish Sports Dome.
In the opener, freshman
Alison Gray (St. Cloud, Minn) gave Stout a 1-0 lead in the second inning when she smacked the first collegiate pitch she saw over the left field fence.
The Blue Devils'
Jenna Johnson (Sr, Menomonie) worked out of a jam in the fourth inning, giving up a lead off double, before stranding two runners.
Gray gave Stout a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth after
Kat Nelson (So, Chippewa Falls) singled to open the inning, then stole second. Nelson advanced to third on a groundout by
Kelly Conway (Jr, La Crescent, Minn). Gray laid down a sacrifice bunt to plate Nelson.
The Saints tied the game in the fifth on a two-run home run to left center field by Kristin Swartz, then took the lead in the sixth inning with four runs, capped off by a two-run home run by Brittni Schmidt.
Kristy Hoffman (Sr, Circle Pines, Minn) took the loss in the first game, then went the distance to get the win in the second game.
The Saints got on the board first, scoring an unearned run on a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
The Blue Devils took the lead in the third inning.
Lacey Joslin (Jr, Sturgeon Lake, Minn) opened the inning with a walk, then stole second.
Sammy Peterson (So, Hudson) was hit by a pitch and Nelson laid down a near-perfect sacrifice bunt to move Joslin and Peterson. Following an out, Gray delivered a two run single to center field.
Stout upped the ante to 4-1 in the fifth inning when freshman
Jamie Olson (Eau Claire) floated a lead-off home run over the right field fence. Peterson singled to center then, after a pitching change, moved to second on a wild pitch. Nelson came through with a single through the shortstop and Peterson came home on a sacrifice by Conway.
St. Scholastica pulled to within one run in the sixth inning when Darcy Roach doubled in a pair of runs. The Saints had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh. Hoffman forced a flyout to right field, followed by a strikeout, then allowed a dingle down the right field line that Olson, playing right field, tried to make a diving catch on, but ball fell right in front of her glove. The final batter hit a soft fly ball to Olson to end the game.
On the day, Gray finished with four RBI, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Nelson and Peterson were each 2-for-5, while Johnson was 2-for-6. Both Hoffman and Johnson finished the day with three strikeouts apiece.
Stout returns to the Irish Sports Dome, Friday, Feb. 26 when they play Northwestern College at 10 a.m.
