Big first half puts Blue Devils over Pioneers

DeWitt scores seven points in one minute span

UW-Stout 74, UW-Platteville 50

PLATTEVILLE (February 13, 2010) - A big first half, along with a scoring spurt by Danielle DeWitt (Sr, Green Bay), pushed UW-Stout to a 74-50 win over UW-Platteville Saturday at Bo Ryan Court.

Coming off a loss to UW-Superior their last game out, Stout (14-10, 9-6) wasted little time taking control of this game. Leading 6-3 about four minutes into the game, DeWitt tossed in seven points in less than a minute to put Stout ahead 13-3 as the Blue Devils built up a 41-18 halftime lead. Stout held as much as a 28 point lead late in the half.

Julia Hirssig (Sr, Rochester, Minn), who led all scorers with 22 points, had14 points before the break. DeWitt had nine first half points. Kim Stokke (Sr, Menomonie) and Tricia VanVreede (Jr, Little Chute) each had eight second half points.

VanVreede had a big game, finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds, her first double-double of the season. Stokke finished with 12 points and DeWitt 11. Hirssig pulled down 11 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the year.

Stacia Nemitz scored 15 points for the Pioneers (12-11, 5-9) and Charity Stotmeister added 10 points.

The win assured the Blue Devils of a berth in the WIAC post-season tournament. Stout is currently in fourth place, a half game ahead of UW-La Crosse and a half game behind UW-River Falls. The top two seeded teams have a bye for the quarterfinals. The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will host a quarterfinal game. Only six teams make the post-season tournament.

Stout has a bye on Wednesday, Feb. 17 and will close the regular season Saturday, Feb. 20 when they host UW-Eau Claire at 3 p.m.
