MENOMONIE, Wis. (November 15, 2010) - UW-Stout opened their season at home Monday night, hosting St. Cloud State, but fell to the Huskies, 101-64, at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The young and relatively inexperienced Blue Devil squad turned the ball over 39 times, 26 of which came in the first half.
St. Cloud State (1-0) scored the first nine points of the game, all of which came off four Stout (0-1) turnovers.
Tricia VanVreede (Sr, Little Chute) answered with a four-point play, pulling Stout within five points, the closest they would get the rest of the game.
The Huskies then went on a merciless 24-5 run, taking a 33-9 lead halfway through the first half. St. Cloud ended the half on a 9-2 run and went into the locker rooms up 53-20.
The teams played a much more even second half, but the damage was already done. Stout was only outscored by four points in the second half. They cut their turnovers in half and upped their shooting percentage by over 20 percent, scoring 44 points to the St. Cloud's 48.
VanVreede led the Blue Devils with 16 points before fouling out.
Gretta Layman (Sr, Chippewa Falls) came off the bench to score 11 points and grab a team-high six rebounds in her first game as a Blue Devil.
St. Cloud had five players score in double figures, two of whom scored at least 20. Sam Price led all players with 21 points.
Stout will travel to play Ripon College in the Ripon College Tournament this Friday, Nov. 19. The Blue Devils will play Edgewood Saturday, Nov. 20.
