Stout puts off River Falls, takes 24-7 win

UW-Stout 24, UW-River Falls 7

RIVER FALLS (October 2, 2010) - Just when it looked like UW-River Falls would get back into the game, UW-Stout shut the door on the Falcons and went on to a 24-7 win Saturday at Ramer Field.

The Falcons pulled to within striking range, 10-7, in the third quarter, but Stout answered back with a score of their own, then forced a fourth down Falcon fumble to put a halt to the River Falls opportunity.

After a scoreless first quarter, Stout took advantage of a bad River Falls snap on a punt and took over on the River Falls 29 yard line. Five plays later, Blue Devil quarterback Ross Carey (Jr, Little Suamico) connected with tight end Patrick Mengelkoch (Sr, Champlin, Minn) for a 13-yard touchdown at 10:55 in the second quarter.

After holding River Falls on fourth down from their own 21 yard line, Stout drove to the River Falls 9 and Richard Marteney (Fr, Greendale) booted a 26-yard field goal.

The Falcons got on the board in the third quarter, going 82 yards in 13 plays as tailback Taylor Edwards carried the ball the final 16 yards for the score at 6:54. Edwards rushed for 58 total yards on the drive, more than half his game's total of 105 yards.

Stout answered back in the quarter, going 69 yards in nine plays. Carey needed to quarterback sneaks to get the ball over, but he did it on third down to put Stout up 17-7. A key play in the drive was a 31-yard pass to Kyle Wilson (Sr, Eagan, Minn) to put the ball on the Falcons' 5-yard line.

The Falcons threatened on the ensuing drive that started on their own 40. Edwards carried the final four plays of the drive, but was stripped of the ball by Trevor Fiege (Jr, Menomonie) on fourth down at the Stout 17 as Nick Bocik (Sr, Appleton) recovered the ball.

Stout converted the turnover into points, going the distance with a mix of players. A Carey-to-Mengelkoch 25-yard pass on the first play of the drive moved the ball to the Stout 43.  Carey completed a couple of more passes and Paul Bernier (So, Lakeville, Minn) and Craig Warminski (Jr, Stanley) rushed the ball with Warminski scoring from 19 yards out at 9:13 in the fourth quarter.

The Blue Devils forced a punt on the Falcons' next drive and the Blue Devil offense ran out the remaining nearly eight minutes on the clock.

The Falcons' Edwards led all rushers with 105 yards on 27 carries, but River Falls was held to 239 total yards, 130 by rushing, 109 by passing.

Carey completed 14-of-22 passes for 189 yards and the touchdown to Mengelkoch, who finished with three catches for 49 yards. Warminski carried 16 times for 90 yards, while Carlos Concepcion (Sr, Milwaukee) rushed for 39 yards and Bernier for 33 yards. Stout finished with 369 total yards, 189 in the air, 180 on the ground.

Fiege had 10 tackles, seven solo, 1.5 tackles for loss, a fumble forced and one pass break up. Brady Luebke had 16 tackles for the Falcons.

Stout will travel to UW-Whitewater Saturday, Oct. 9, to face the top-ranked and defending national champion Warhawks with a 3 p.m. kickoff.
