Maslowski hits game winner with .3 seconds left

- Megan Maslowski (Sr, Marshfield) hit a basket with .3 seconds remaining in regulation that did not know if it wanted to go in. But Maslowski got the friendly roll and UW-Stout defeated UW-Platteville, 86-84, Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.

With the score tied at 84, both teams turned the ball over. First, Stout was called for traveling with seven seconds remaining. Seconds later, it was Platteville's turn when defensive pressure by Stout's Kayla Windt (Fr, Pence) forced the Pioneer ball handler to step on the line.

Stout called timeout with 5.7 seconds remaining and set up the shot to Maslowski. After a couple of passes, Maslowski got the pass and took the shot. The ball hung on the front of the rim before falling through. Maslowski was fouled and purposely missed the free throw to run the clock and the game was over.

The beginning of the game did not look like it would have any suspense. Platteville (9-5, 2-3) started off hot and Stout (8-6, 4-2) didn't as the Pioneers ran out to a 10-0 lead before Tricia VanVreede (Jr, Little Chute) canned two free throw to put Stout on the board four minutes into the game.

The Pioneers kept the offensive onslaught up andbuilt up as much as a 15-5 lead before Stout went off on a 15-2 run to pull ahead 20-17 midway through the period. Julia Hirssig (Sr, Rochester, Minn), who would go on to a 30-point night before fouling out with about 90 seconds left in the game, scored nine points in the run.

The game was tight the rest of the way with Stout building up as much as a seven point lead several times in the second half. Platteville would keep the outcome in doubt and took a 75-74 lead with five minutes left. The game would be tied 13 times.

Hirssig, who had 21 points at halftime, led all scorers with 30 points, hitting 11-of-17 shots from the floor and 8-of-11 free throws. She had a game-high eight rebuonds.

Maslowski finished with 17 points, hitting 7-of-8 shots from the floor and 3-of-4 free throws. She also handed out four assists.

The Pioneers had four players in double figures, with Stacia Nemitz leading the way with 21 points. Ashley Wolf scored 17 points, making 3-of-5 3-pointers and 6-of-7 free throws. Charity Stomeister scored 13 points and Liz Lawinger 11.

The game featured a parade to the free throw line with Stout committing 29 fouls and Platteville 26. Both teams had one player foul out. Platteville had three players with four fouls and Stout had two players with four fouls.

Platteville drained 31-of-37 free throws, while Stout made 20-of-28. Stout won the battle of the boards, pulling down 42 caroms to 31 for Platteville.

Stout will step out of conference play Tuesday, Jan. 12 when they host Northland College at 7 p.m. Stout will be at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Jan. 16.
