Falcons down Blue Devils in overtime

UW-River Falls 68, UW-Stout 65

RIVER FALLS (January 6, 2010) - UW-Stout overcame a nine point lead in the final six minutes of regulation to force overtime, but UW-River Falls took a lead right away and never relinquished it to defeat the Blue Devils 68-65 Wednesday at Karges Center.

Megan Maslowski (Sr, Marshfield) scored nine points and Julia Hirssig (Sr, Rochester, Minn) added seven points in the final six minutes of regulation to send the game to the extra frame tied at 59..

The 13th ranked Falcons (13-0, 5-0) stayed undefeated on the season when Tess Lardie scored four points in the first two minutes of overtime and River Falls outscored Stout 9-6. Kelli Hilt hit two free throws with seven seconds left and Stout missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Blue Devils (7-6, 3-2) were fighting an uphill battle all evening, holding small leads only briefly, once midway through the first half and the second time with about two minutes left in regulation.

HIrssig led all scorers with 17 points and tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 13 rebounds. Danielle DeWitt (Sr, Green Bay) had 13 points and Maslowski ended with 12 points. Combined with Kim Stokke's (Sr, Menomonie) six points, the Blue Devil seniors combined for 48 points.

The Falcons were led by Lardie with 12 points. Maranda Dohrn notched a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Hilt added 10 points.

The teams literally traded the ball all evening. Stout finished the night with 33 turnovers, while River Falls turned the ball over 32 times. Each team was marked for 24 fouls. River Falls made 18-of-27 free throw attempts, while Stout was 12-of-28 from the line.

With her 17 points, Hirssig climbed to second on the Stout all-time scoring list, surpassing Kelsey Duoss. Hirssig currently has 1419 points. Duoss is now third with 1413 points.

Stout will host UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 9 at 4 p.m., then will host Northland College, Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
