Blue Devils blow Superior out in second half

Stout goes on 32-2 run over first 11 minutes after halftime

UW-Stout 92, UW-Superior 61

SUPERIOR (January 20, 2010) - It must have been one heckuva halftime talk.

With the scored tied at 43 apiece at intermission, UW-Stout exploded out of the halftime locker room, holding UW-Superior to only 18 second half points and went on to a 92-61 win over the Yellowjackets Wednesday at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

Stout, on the strength of nine Julia Hirssig (Sr, Rochester, Minn) points, went off on a 15-0 run over the first seven minutes of the second half. The Blue Devils (10-7, 5-3) kept up the defensive pressure and rolled off a 32-2 run over the first 11 minutes of the stanza and held a 30 points, 75-45, lead with 8:55 to play.

Superior (6-10, 1-7) was limited to 21.9 percent (7-32) shooting from the floor in the second half, while Stout shot 69.7 percent (23-33) after the break.

The first half was a completely different story. The game featured six tied scores before Stout went up by seven points, 19-12, midway through the half. But the Yellowjackets answered the call, tied the game and went up by as much as three points with nine minutes left on the clock. The teams traded leads throughout the rest of the stanza and the Yellowjackets tied the score for the 11th time in the half with seven seconds left.

Superior shot 48.5 percent (16-33) in the first half, while Stout shot 39.5 percent (15-38).

Hirssig led five Stout players in double figures with 21 points and recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. Danielle DeWitt (Sr, Green Bay) finished with 13 points. Megan Maslowski (Sr, Marshfield) and Stacy Bush (Sr, Hills, Minn) each tallied 11 points, for Bush, a Stout career high. Tricia VanVreede (Jr, Little Chute) tossed in 10 points.

The Yellowjackets had three players with double digit scoring. Katie Zavodny had 12 points and Kelsey Thingsvold and Hailey Hart each had 10 points.

Stout will host UW-River Falls, Saturday, Jan. 23 at 4 p.m., and UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.
