OSHKOSH (January 16, 2010) - UW-Stout trailed by as much as 22 points with seven minutes left in the game, pulled to within nine points, but could not complete the comeback attempt as the Blue Devils were defeated 80-68 at UW-Oshkosh Saturday.
Holding a three point, 33-30, halftime lead, the Titans came storming out of the locker room and went on a 22-4 run, holding Stout (9-7, 4-3) to no field goals over the first nine minutes of the second half. Stout's only points during the Oshkosh (6-10, 1-6) run came on four free throws by
Julia Hirssig (Sr, Rochester, Minn).
The loss covered over an outstanding performance by Hirssig who matched a career best with 37 points. The 37 points is the most scored by an individual player in the WIAC this season. Hirssig scored 19 points in the first half, one of only four Stout players to score before halftime.
Stout trailed 63-41 with 7:04 left in the contest when they finally came to life.
Megan Maslowski (Sr, Marshfield) scored eight of her 10 points during that final spurt to help Stout get as close as 72-63 with 1:04 remaining. Stout was forced to fumble and Oshkosh connected on 6-of-7 charity shots.
In winning their first conference game of the season, Oshkosh had three players in double figures. Michelle Boeder had 19, Abby Eddy 18 and Beth Hebl 17. The Titans shot 61 percent (14-23) in the second half and 54.5 percent (24-44) for the game.
The Titans' bench outscored Stout's bench, 47-10, with
Tricia VanVreede (Jr, Little Chute) scoring nine of those bench points. The win snapped an eight game losing streak to Stout.
Hirssig tallied her sixth double-double of the season by pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds as Stout outrebounded Oshkosh 40-36.
Kim Stokke (Sr, Menomonie) scored eight points and had a career-high 11 rebounds for the Blue Devils.
Stout will be at UW-Superior, Wednesday, Jan. 20, then will host UW-River Falls, Saturday, Jan. 23 at 4 p.m. to start the second round of conference play.
