MENOMONIE (April 6, 2009) - Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Jr, Anoka, Minn) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th of game two as Stout came back from an 8-0 deficit to win 9-8 and Andy Lorenzen (Sr, Menomonie) had two home runs and six RBI in a 13-5 game one win as UW-Stout swept UW-Platteville Monday at Nelson Field.
Enerson-Matthews may get the headlines for game two, but it was the work of pitcher Nate Hanson (Jr, Bloomington, Minn) that helped get the Blue Devils (12-6, 3-3) into position for the win.
Hanson pitched a gem of a game, working 10.1 innings after coming on in relief in the first inning with the bases loaded and only one out. Hanson scattered seven hits, but gave up only one run, that coming in the second inning, and kept the Pioneers (7-9, 2-4) off the board until leaving in the 11th inning. Hanson struck out seven along the way.
The Blue Devils battled back to eventually tie the game. Stout got a single run in the bottom of the second on a Dane Carlson (Jr, St. Michael, Minn) double, then pulled to with two runs, 8-6, with a five run third inning. Brandon O'Connell (So, Elk Mound) keyed the inning with a three-run double. Enerson-Matthews drove in a run and Carlson tripled in a run.
O'Connell snagged another RBI in the fourth and Ryan Stace (St, Oregon) tied the game with a left field single in the fifth.
Meanwhile, Hanson faced only three batters in five different innings and faced only four batters in two other innings. Hanson left after two outs - earning applause from the Platteville bench - but allowed two runners. Matt Phipps (So, Manitowoc) came on in relief to face one batter and got the fielders' choice out and, eventually, the win.
Adam Stuessel (Jr, River Falls) opened the 11th with a walk, but was out on a failed sacrifice bunt. Ryan Gilbertson's (Jr, River Falls) bunt single moved Stace to second. Following a line drive out, Stace and Gilbertson moved to third and second on a balk and O'Connell drew a walk to set up Enerson-Matthews.
O'Connell was 4-for-6 with four RBI, while Enerson-Matthews was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Carlson was 3-for-6 with two RBI. Stout tallied 16 hits and surrendered eight.
In game one, Lorenzen hit two home runs and drove in six runs as Stout finished the game with 14 hits.
Lorenzen hit a three-run shot to left field in the fifth inning, then followed that up in his next at-bat with a two run home run to right field.
Enerson-Matthews was 3-for-3 for the Blue Devils with three RBI and three runs scored. Enerson-Matthews had a two run single in the seventh inning.
Stout surrendered a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but came back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, the added three more in third on RBIs by Enerson-Matthews, Brian Giebel (So, River Falls) and O'Connell.
After allowing the Pioneers to pull to within 5-4 in the fifth, O'Connell hit an RBI double and Lorenzen recorded his three-run homer.
Russ Jiskra (Jr, Hudson) picked up the win, going five innings, allowing four runs, but only one earned. Jiskra struck out five. Joe Lange went six innings, recorded seven strikeouts for the Pioneers and took the loss.
On the day, Enerson-Matthews was 6-for-7 with four runs scored and five RBI. O'Connell was 6-for-10 with six RBI.
The Blue Devils will host UW-Oshkosh, Thursday, April 9 at 1 p.m. and Friday, April 10 at noon.

MENOMONIE (April 4, 2009) - The UW-Stout baseball team split a doubleheader with UW-Platteville, Saturday afternoon at Nelson Field, winning the first game, 13-9, before dropping the second, 16-3.
The first game between the WIAC schools went back and forth for much of the game. Platteville (7-7, 2-2) struck first with a three-run top of the second. Stout (10-6, 1-3) managed to produce one run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to two.
Down 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Stout mustered up some base runners to set up a grand slam by
Brandon O'Connell (So, Elk Mound), his first of two homers in the game. The Pioneers, however, answered the call in the top of the fifth, tying the game at eight with a three-run inning.
The teams traded runs in the bottom of the sixth and the top of the seventh, knotting the game at nine runs apiece.
In the bottom of the eighth,
Ryan Gilbertson (Jr, River Falls) singled to drive in the go-ahead run, followed by a home run by
Brian Giebel (So, River Falls), which sealed the deal for the Blue Devils.
Matt Doornink (Sr, Cottage Grove, Minn), who struck out seven batters in three innings of work, picked up the win for the Blue Devils. Platteville's Justin Cox was assessed the loss. O'Connell finished the game 2-for-3 with two home runs and six RBI's while Platteville's Jason Jacobson went 6-for-6 with six singles and two RBI's.
The second game was close for three innings, when Platteville lead, 1-0. The Pioneers scored six runs in the fourth inning, followed by three in the sixth and five in the seventh, taking a 16-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Stout, needing five runs to avoid the 10-run rule, only managed to pick up one when O'Connell doubled to drive in Giebel.
Ethan Smallbrook (Fr, Wisconsin Rapids), who started the game for the Blue Devils, picked up the loss, while Kyle Mack pitched a complete seven-inning game for the Pioneers for the win.
Jacobson led the way for the Pioneers all day, finishing the series 9-for-10 with four RBI's, four runs, and two walks.
