UW-Whitewater 15, UW-Stout 6
MENOMONIE (April 3, 2009) - The UW-Stout women's softball team allowed a total of 27 runs in two games, Friday afternoon at Alumni Field, as they absorbed a pair of losses to the visiting UW-Whitewater Warhawks, 12-0 and 15-6.
Whitewater got off to an early lead in the first game as they scored seven runs in the first inning and five in the second. The first four Warhawks to step up to the plate traveled around the bases, followed by another group of three consecutive batters just moments later.
Whitewater's Jessica Stang had a perfect game going until Nelly Peterson (Sr, Cumberland) singled in the fourth inning. Stang earned the win by allowing only one hit in four complete innings accompanied by eight strikeouts. Kristy Hoffman (Jr, Circle Pines, Minn) was saddled with the loss for the Blue Devils.
The second game of the doubleheader was much closer throughout the beginning of the game. Whitewater opened with a three-run first inning, but Stout got their first run of the day in the bottom of the first when
Kat Nelson (Fr, Chippewa Falls) scored on a wild pitch after she walked to reach base.
In the top of the third inning, Whitewater took a 7-1 lead, but Stout answered again by producing three runs in their half of the inning partly thanks to Laura Vanderhoof's (Fr, Mankato, Minn) two-RBI single.
The Warhawks finally pulled away with an eight-run top of the fourth, to lock in the 10-run rule, which took place after five completed innings. Vanderhoof, who started the game on the mound picked up the loss.
Vanderhoof pitched 6.2 innings on the day, allowing seven earned runs and striking out five batters. Hoffman allowed seven earned runs on eight hits in her three innings of work.
Stout will return to the field tomorrow afternoon to take on the Titans of UW-Oshkosh with the first game scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
