MENOMONIE  (April 28, 2009) - Sam Sarna (Fr, Buffalo, Minn) blasted a triple into right field that scored what would prove to be the game-winning run as UW-Stout defeated UW-Stevens Point, 5-4, to earn a split with the Pointers at Alumni Field Tuesday. The Pointers won the first game, 8-2.

With the Blue Devils (19-19, 7-9) holding a tenuous 4-3 lead heading into the sixth inning, Sarna hit her first collegiate triple, lifting the ball over the right fielder, scoring Jess Grobe (So, Millville, Minn) to give Stout a 5-3 lead.

The Pointers (20-18, 5-11) scored a single run in the seventh inning, but Jenna Johnson (Jr, Menomonie) shut the visitors down with two runners left on base to earn the save.

The two teams deadlocked for the first three innings, with both teams scoring two runs in the first inning. Stout jumped out to a 3-2 lead when Kat Nelson (Fr, Chippewa Falls) beat out a close infield single, scoring Morgan Beyer (Fr, Medford).

The Pointers knotted the score in the third inning.

Stout took the lead back in the fifth when Nelly Peterson (Sr, Cumberland) stroked a single down the left field line to score Kaitlin Helgaas (So, Fond du Lac). Stout pitcher Laura Vanderhoof (Fr, Mankato, Minn) gave way to Johnson to open the sixth and Johnson gave Vanderhoof the win.

In the opener, the Pointers' Samantha Bizeau capped off a seven-run fourth inning with a no-out grand slam. The Pointers added another run in the seventh. Stout got their only runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Nelson hit a two-run home run to centerfield. Nelson was 3-for-3 in the game.

Stout will participate in the WIAC Tournament, May 1-3, at UW-Superior. The win today gave Stout the sixth seed and the Blue Devils will play third seeded UW-Oshkosh, Friday, May 1 at 10 a.m. The two teams split during the season with Stout winning the first game, 5-4, in 11 innings and the Titans taking the second game, 4-1.
