Smallbrook picks up win, Doornink notches 10 strikeouts

MENOMONIE  (April 27, 2009) - Ethan Smallbrook (Fr, Wisconsin Rapids) pitched a complete game and scattered eight hits to pick up his first collegiate win as UW-Stout defeated UW-Whitewater in the opening game, 6-1, Monday at Nelson Field. The Warhawks came back to win the second game, 13-3, in eight innings.

Smallbrook struck out four and walked two while allowing only one run, that coming in the fifth inning. The Warhawks (21-11, 13-8) did threaten in the ninth, loading the bases, but Smallbrook sent the final out down swinging.

Designated hitter Greg Smolinski (Jr, Menasha) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and had a hand in five Blue Devil (16-14, 7-11) runs. Smolinski plated another runner when he hit into a double play and later beat out an RBI infield single that was thrown away, allowing Casey Dittel (Fr, Woodbury, Minn) to score in a two run fifth inning. 

Smolinski had RBIs in the first inning, fifth inning and hit a solo home run - his third of the season - in the seventh.

Dittel went 3-for-4 and got the Blue Devils' other RBI when he stroked a hard single down the left field line in the sixth inning.

Whitewater wasted little time in the second game, throwing up four runs before Stout got to bat, then added another in the second to take a 5-1 lead.

Stout put two runs on the board in the third inning. Ryan Stace (Sr, Oregon) drove in a run and Brian Giebel (So, River Falls) scored on an error.

Whitewater added two runs int he sixth and Stout got their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Andy Lorenzen (Sr, Menomonie). Lorenzen and Giebel each had two hits in the game for Stout.

The Warhawks, who hit three home runs in the game, including a grand slam by Kevin Zalnis in the eighth inning, scored two in the seventh and four in the eight.

Stout will be at UW-Superior, Wednesday, April 29 and will close out the regular season at UW-La Crosse, May 2-3.

MENOMONIE  (April 25, 2009) - Matt Doornink (Sr, Cottage Grove, Minn) struck out 10 and Brandon O'Connell (So, Elk Mound) drove in four runs as UW-Stout defeated UW-Whitewater, 9-5, in the front of a doubleheader with the Warhawks. Whitewater captured the second game, 8-4.

Doornink went the distance and allowed nine hits - four in the ninth inning - and worked out of a jam in the ninth. Leading 9-2, Doornink gave up a two-out, three-run home run to Matt Beyer. The Warhawks bunted their next runner on safely and Sam Petrasko sent a bullet down the left field line for a double.

But Doornink, who had earlier in inning notched two strikeouts, got the final out, flyout to left field.

Stout (15-13, 6-10) struck early in the game as O'Connell delivered a two run single in the first inning. The Warhawks (20-10, 12-7) cut the lead in half with a single run in the second.

The Blue Devils struck for three runs in the third inning, as Andy Lorenzen (Sr, Menomonie) drew a bases loaded walk. Dane Carlson (Fr, St. Michael, Minn) reached on an error, scoring Greg Smolinski (Jr, Menasha). Casey Dittel (Fr, Woodbury, Minn) drove in third run with a smash to centerfield.

The Warhawks scored a single run in the fourth inning. O'Connell drove in two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Brian Giebel (So, River Falls) homered in the fifth and Smolinski cleared the right field fence in the sixth inning.

O'Connell was 3-for-5 in the game. Giebel was 2-for-5 and Smolinski was 2-for-3 as Stout connected for 11 hits. Whitewater was led by Ryan Leavitt (2-5) and Matt Millar (2-4).

In game two, Stout pitchers gave up 10 walks as the 24th ranked Warhawks downed the Blue Devils, 8-4. 

Whitewater opened the game with a four-run first inning, but Stout answered back with three runs in their half of the inning.

Matt Tschida (Sr, Inver Grove Heights, Minn) and Lorenzen each walked with the bases loaded to get the easy RBIs. Carlson drove in a run with a single.

Whitewater scored a single run in the sixth, then added three runs in the seventh. Stout added a run on a groundout RBI by O'Connell to end the scoring. O'Connell finished the day with five RBI, and turned two double plays from third base, both in the second game.
