SUPERIOR (April 22, 2009) - UW-Stout lost both halves of their doubleheader at UW-Superior, Wednesday, 11-5, 6-1.
In the opening game, Stout (14-12, 5-9) stranded 13 runners despite pounding out 12 hits. The Blue Devils left runners on in seven innings and four times left two runners on.
After spotting the Yellowjackets (12-18, 4-10) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Stout put a two-spot on the board in the second inning after Greg Smolinski (Jr, Menasha) scored on a wild pitch and Andy Lorenzen (Sr, Menomonie) drove in a run.
Superior scored two runs in the third to go out front 3-2, but Stout tied it up on a Brian Giebel (So, River Falls) RBI single to left field in the fourth inning. Superior took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Stout kept chipping away with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, as Lorenzen plated another run and Ryan Gilbertson (Jr, River Falls) brought in a run on a sacrifice fly.
The Yellowjackets nailed Stout with a four run seventh inning to jump ahead 10-5. Brett Olson hit a two-run home run and Rhett Williamson had a two-run double. Superior added another run in the eighth, this one on a wild pitch.
In the nightcap, Superior got all they would really need with a three-run home run by Olson in the first inning.
Stout got their only run of the game in the third inning, an unearned run that scored on an error. Stout was held to three hits.
Russ Jiskra (Jr, Hudson) took the loss, but struck out 10 Yellowjackets along the way, scattered six hits and walked only one.
