STEVENS POINT (April 15, 2009) - UW-Stout jumped out to a 7-0 lead after five innings, then had to hold off UW-Stevens Point for an 8-6 first game win Wednesday at University Field. The Pointers won the second game, 5-3.
Stout (14-10, 5-7) built the lead to 8-3 after seven innings, but the Pointers (15-9, 3-5) scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth, then added another in the ninth.
In game one, Stout's
Dane Carlson (Jr, St. Michael, Minn) was 3-for-5 with five runs batted in, three of them coming on a triple to key a four-run second inning. Carlson drove in two more runs in the fifth inning with a right field single.
Nate Hanson (Jr, Bloomington, Minn) notched the win, going seven innings, scattering seven hits and giving up two runs. Hanson struck out three and allowed two runs, both earned.
Dave Oestreich (So, Chippewa Falls) pitched the final 1.1 innings to record his fourth save of the season, by stranding runners on second and third in the final inning.
In game two, Point scored two runs in both the second and fourth innings. In inning four, the Pointers Jon Schoch drove in a run with a double, then scored on a wild pitch. Schoch finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Steve Considine was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Stout had four hits in the game, Stevens Point finished with six. Greg Smolinski (Jr, Menasha), in his first game back since suffering an injury at Stevens Point, April 1, was Stout's only multi-hit player, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Carlson had two stolen bases.
Stout has the WIAC bye this weekend and will play a single nine-inning non-conference game Sunday, April 19 at St. Thomas. Stout will be at Lawrence University, Monday, April 20.
