Pointers sweep Blue Devils in conference opener

STEVENS POINT  (April 1, 2009) - UW-Stevens Point used a walk-off grand slam to end game one and a walk off two-run double to end game two and sweep UW-Stout Wednesday on a cold April WIAC baseball opener at University Field.

The Pointers' Jeremy Richter hit a four-run shot in 12-1 opening game seven-inning win and Cody Koback hit a two-run double to key a three-run ninth inning in a 5-4 Pointer win in the second game.

The Pointers (11-3, 2-0) took advantage of five Stout errors in the opener and scored 10 runs over the last four innings. Stout's (9-5, 0-2) only run of th egame came in the fourth inning when Andy Lorenzen (Sr, Menomonie) drove in Greg Smolinski (Jr, Menasha).

in the second game, Stout took a 3-1 lead after three innings, scoring a run in the first innings as Josh Anderson (So, Osseo) drove in a run. The Blue Devils picked up two runs in the third as Ryan Gilbertson (Jr, River Falls) plated two runners.

The Pointers pulled two within 3-2 in the fourth inning, but Stout took the two run, 4-2, lead back when Ryan Stace (Sr, Oregon) stole home on a double steal.

The Pointers took the game with three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Stout will host UW-Platteville, Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5.
