KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 19, 2009) - UW-Stout lost to Carthage College, 3-1, and to Ramapo College, 9-1, on the Blue Devils final day of the Rebel Spring Games Thursday.
Carthage pitcher Allie Benthusen gave the Lady Reds all they would need in the opener with a two-run home to just left of dead centerfield in the second inning. Carthage (5-3) added another run in the third inning.
Stout (10-8) rallied back for a single run in the bottom of the third inning when Kelly Conway's (So, La Crescent, Minn) double to left centerfield scored Sammy Peterson (Fr, Hudson), who got on with a one-out single to left field. Stout went down in order the rest of the way and neither team seriously threatened the rest of the way.
In the six-inning 9-1 loss to Ramapo (10-0), the Roadrunners scored three runs in the first inning, then added six more in the second inning. Kaitlin Helgaas (So, Fond du Lac) scored Stout only run, coming in on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
Stout is off until Saturday, April 4 when they host UW-Oshkosh in a WIAC opener.
Illinois Wesleyan 10, UW-Stout 4 | UW-Stout 4, Smith College 1
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 18, 2009) - After dropping a 10-4 decision to 19th ranked Illinois Wesleyan, UW-Stout bounced right back for a 4-1 win over Smith College Wednesday at the Rebel Spring Games.
Kristy Hoffman (Jr, Circle Pines, Minn) went the distance, striking out five and scattering six hits. Hoffman helped her own her cause with an RBI double to center field in the second inning to open the scoring.
Sammy Peterson (Fr, Hudson) recorded what would become the game-winning hit with an RBI double in the third inning. Peterson was plated by Kat Nelson's (Fr, Chippewa Falls) single. Nelson eventually stole third base, then came home on a throwing error by the catcher to give Stout (10-5) a 4-0 lead.
Smith (3-3) broke up Hoffman's shutout bid with two hits and a Stout error.
Peterson was 2-for-3, as was Katie Fichter (Sr, Baraboo).
In the day's opener, 19th ranked Illinois Wesleyan (6-0) rocked Stout's Laura Vanderhoof (Fr, Mankato, Minn) and handed Vanderhoof her first collegiate loss, with six runs in the second inning.
Wesleyan jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Stout scored four runs in the third. The Blue Devils loaded the bases and Jenna Johnson (Jr, Menomonie) drew a walk and Taylor Wild (So, Apple Valley, Minn) was hit by a pitch. Fichter brought in two more runs with a single to right field.
Wesleyan put 11 hits in the scorebook.
Stout will wrap up their spring break trip when they face Carthage College and Ramapo College Thursday, March 19.
Anderson, Ind, University 7, UW-Stout 0 | UW-Stout 7, Nazareth College 0
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 17, 2009) - UW-Stout found themselves on both ends of 7-0 decisions in their third day at the Rebel Spring Games, losing to Anderson College, but bouncing back to down Nazareth College. Laura Vanderhoof (Fr, Mankato, Minn) pitched a one-hit gem against Nazareth in the nightcap.
Vanderhoof, in picking up her sixth win of the season, did not allow a base runner until the third batter of the fifth inning when Lizzie Barlow dropped a soft, bloop single to just beyond the grass in right field. Vanderhoof struck out six.
The Blue Devils (9-5) scored three runs in the second inning as Katie Fichter (Sr, Baraboo), Sammy Peterson (Fr, Hudson) and Kat Nelson (Fr, Chippewa Falls) each drove in runs. The Blue Devils added four more runs in the fourth inning to salt the game away.
In a forgettable final three innings, Stout gave up seven runs and were shut out, 7-0, by Anderson University (5-1) in the second game. Stout stranded seven runners and committed four errors and a number of mental errors to allow the runs, six of them unearned. The Blue Devils three times left runners at second and third.
Stout will play Ilinois Wesleyan and Smith College, Wednesday, March 18. The game with Illinois-Springfield has been cancelled. The Blue Devils will conclude the week by facing Carthage College and Ramapo College, Thursday, March 19.
Endicott 4, Stout 3 (8 inn) | Stout 1, Milllikin 0
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 15, 2009) - Kat Nelson (Fr, Chippewa Falls) drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as UW-Stout defeated Millikin University, 1-0, in the Blue Devils second day of competition at the Rebel Spring Games Sunday.
Earlier in the day, the Blue Devils lost, 4-3, in the eighth inning to Endicott College.
After nearly seven innings of scoreless ball, Stout (8-4) executed the winning rally. With one out, pinch hitter Kaitlin Helgaas (So, Fond du Lac) drew a walk, then advanced to second on a passed ball. Morgan Beyer (Fr, Medford) was pulled off doing the scorebook and dumped a bloop single over the shortstop to put runners at first and second.
Sammy Peterson (Fr, Hudson) hit into a fielder's choice, forcing out Helgaas at third. Nelson smashed an 0-1 pitch to right field to score Beyer. Nelson had two hits in the game.
Jenna Johnson (Jr, Menomonie) pitched two innings to get her first win of the season, allowing only one hit and no runners past second.
In the opener, Stout held the lead, getting single runs int hesecond and fourth innings. Endicott manufactured two runs in the sixth, taking advantage of two Stout errors to tie the game at 2-2.
Stout took the lead in the top of the eighth when Johnson lifted a sacrifice fly to score Nelly Peterson (Sr, Cumberland).
The Gulls took advantage of two Stout mistakes in the bottom of the eighth on the same play. A wild pitch and throw error allowed the tying and game winning runs to score.
Stout is off Monday, but will meet Anderson University and Nazareth College, Tuesday, March 17.
Stout 4, Washington & Jefferson 2 | Stout 6, Washington & Jefferson 3
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 14, 2009) - Jenna Johnson (Jr, Menomonie) drove in three runs and picked up the save in the second game as UW-Stout swept Washington & Jefferson, Pa, University, 4-2, 6-3, on the first day of the Blue Devils action at the Rebel Spring Games Saturday.
Nelly Peterson (Sr, Cumberland) turned an unassisted double play at third base to end the Presidents' (0-2) threat in the bottom of the seventh.
Johnson hit a single up the middle in the third inning to drive in two runs, then drove in another in the sixth inning. Johnson worked the final two innings, surrendering no runs, hit or walks in facing eight batters in relief of Kristy Hoffman (Jr, Circle Pines, Minn), who struck out three and scattered three hits.
In the opener, Stout (7-3) scored three runs in the fifth inning asLaura Vanderhoof (Fr, Mankato, Minn) went the distance, allowing six hits and two runs, one unearned. Vanderhoof struck out four and walked two.
