PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 18, 2009) - UW-Stout wrapped up their spring break trip to Arizona Wednesday by splitting with SUNY-New Paltz, winning the first, 16-4, then losing the nightcap, 4-3.
Stout (9-3) rolled the Hawks (2-6) in the first game by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the third and seven in the bottom of the fourth as New Paltz helped Stout's cause with four errors in the game.
Brian Giebel (So, River Falls) keyed Stout offensive attack going 3-for-4 with three doubles and four RBI. Dane Carlson (Fr, St. Michael, Minn) was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Ryan Stace (Sr, Oregon) drove in two runs. Andy LaBrosse (So, Stillwater, Minn) notched a triple. Matt Phipps (So, Manitowoc) recorded the win, going six innings with three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Stout took an early 3-0 lead, but New Paltz rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Stout loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but stranded all three runners.
Giebel recorded his fourth double of the afternoon, and drove in a run with a single in the fourth inning.
Stout returns to action when they open WIAC play by traveling to UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, April 1.
Stout 14, Knox 8 | Stout 7, Knox 6
PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 17, 2009) - UW-Stout pounded out 23 hits in the opener, then had to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to record a sweep over Knox College, 14-8, 7-6, Tuesday, during the Blue Devils' spring break trip in Arizona.
Andy Lorenzen (Sr, Menomonie), Greg Smolinski (Jr, Menasha) and Dane Carlson (Fr, St. Michael, Minn) each went 3-for-4 in the opener and Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Jr, Anoka, Minn) was 4-for-4.
Lorenzen drove in three runs and a double. Smolinski had a triple with two RBI. Carlson had a double and two RBI and Enerson-Matthews had one RBI.
Stout notched six runs in the third inning, then added three runs in the sixth after Knox pulled to within 9-6. Each team scored two runs in the seventh. Nate Hanson (Jr, Bloomington, Minn) worked the first four innings, striking out four, for the win.
Ryan Stace (Sr, Oregon) drove in Carlson with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth in the second game to break a 6-6 tie. Stace was 3-for-5 in the game, while Casey Dittel (Fr, Woodbury, Minn) was 3-for-4 with an RBI andCarlson was 2-for-4 with a triple, stolen base and one RBI. Sam Weinberg (Fr, Edina, Minn) worked the eighth inning to get the win, striking out two. The Blue Devils had 13 hits in the game.
Stout closes their Arizona trip when they play New Paltz State Wednesday, March 18.
Stout 13, Dickinson 9 | Stout 8, Dickinson 7 (8 inn)
PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 16, 2009) - Taking a page from the UW-Stout hockey team, the UW-Stout baseball team launched two come-from-behind wins to sweep Dickenson College, 13-9, 8-7, Monday in Arizona.
After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning of the first game, Brian Giebel (So, River Falls) and Ryan Stace (Sr, Oregon) keyed a five-run second inning with back-to-back home runs that put Stout (6-2) ahead, but the Blue Devils allowed some more drama in the game.
Stout jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but allowed Dickinson five runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.
Stace and Greg Smolinski (Jr, Menasha) each delivered two run singles in the top of the seventh, then Dave Oestreich (So, Chippewa Falls) shut down Dickinson in the bottom half of the inning.
In the second game, Stout blew a six run lead in the top of the seventh by surrendering a six-run inning.
Giebel, Smolinski and Stace again played a key role in the win. Giebel reached on a one-out single, the moved to third on Stace's left field double. Smolinski's single to left plated Giebel with the winning run.
Oestreich came on to pitch 1.1 innings and pick up his first win of the season.
All of Stout's games in Phoenix are scheduled to be seven inning contests.
Stout 9, Marian 7 | Marian 9, Stout 4
PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 14, 2009) - UW-Stout recorded four home runs in a 9-7 win over Marian University in the first game of the day, but the Sabres came back to earn a split with a 9-4 night cap win Saturday.
Dane Carlson (Fr, St. Michael, Minn), Greg Smolnski (Jr, Menasha), Ryan Gilbertson (Jr, River Falls) and Matt Tschida (Sr, Inver Grove Heights, Minn) each launched rockets over the fence. Carlson and Gilbertson each recorded three RBI in the game and Smolinski and Tschida had solo shots.
Matt Phipps (So, Manitowoc) worked four innings, allowed two hits and struck out seven to get the win.
In the nightcap, Stout (4-2) were led by Gilbertson with a double and an RBI.
Stout built a 4-2 lead, but Marian scored six runs in the fifth inning to notch the win.
Stout will meet Dickinson State, Monday, March 16.
UW-Stout 8, Simpson College 7 | Simpson College 8, UW-Stout 3
PHOENIX, Ariz. (March 13, 2009) - Jerrel Enerson-Matthews (Jr, Anoka, Minn) tied the game and Ryan Gilbertson (Jr, River Falls) got the game-winning hit as the UW-Stout baseball team split their spring break opening doubleheader with Simpson College, Friday. Stout won the first, 8-7, but lost the second, 8-3.
Trailing 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Enerson-Matthews, who was 3-for-3 on the afternoon, stroked a two-run single to tie the game at 7-7. Enerson-Matthews then stole second to set the table for Gilbertson, who drove him home with a single to right field.
Ryan Kraft (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) picked up the win in relief.
In the second game, Greg Smolinski (Jr, Menasha) hit a two-run home run for Stout biggest offensive output of the game. Stout is now 3-1 on the season.
The Blue Devils will play Marian University, Saturday, March 14.
