UW-Whitewater 63, UW-Stout 40
WHITEWATER (February 7, 2009) - UW-Whitewater came at UW-Stout early and often as the Warhawks handed the Blue Devils a 63-40 loss Saturday.
The Warhawks (18-3, 9-3) jumped out to a 19-8 lead after less than 10 minutes, then took a 34-19 lead into the locker room. The Warhawks kept up the onslaught and had a 25 point lead six minutes into the second half.
Kelsey Hendrickson scored 13 points for Whitewater, while Tiffany Morton and Heidi Sonntag each scored 12 points.
It was Julia Hirssig (Jr, Rochester, Minn), who had averaged more than 30 points per game in her last four outings, leading Stout with 11 points and eight rebounds. In Stout's upset win over UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday, Hirssig had scored 37 points. Tricia Van Vreede (So, Little Chute) also scored 11 points.
Stout (12-9, 7-5) shot only 26 percent (14-53) from the field, while Whitewater shot 40 percent (22-55).
This was the first time Stout has been held to less than 50 points since a 59-44 loss to UW-Eau Claire during the 2006-07 season. The loss snapped a four game winning streak for Stout and also snapped a two-game losing streak for Whitewater.
Stout will host UW-Superior, Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. and UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Feb. 14 at 5 p.m.
