MENOMONIE (February 11, 2009) - Julia Hirssig (Jr, Rochester, Minn) scored the first six points of the game and UW-Stout jumped out to a quick lead they kept adding to on their way to an 88-56 win over UW-Superior Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
Stout (13-9, 8-5) started off with a 6-0 lead after two minutes, stretched that 21-4 after nine minutes and doubled up the Yellowjackets, 42-21, by halftime. The Blue Devils held as much as a 37 point lead with 10 minutes left in the second half.
Stout, which was coming off one of their poorest offensive showings in quite a while, shot 49 percent for the game (28-57) and got points from 12 players.
Hirssig finished the night with 19 points, playing only 20 total minutes, and recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 13 rebounds, nine in the first half. Kim Stokke (Jr, Menomonie) added 11 points and Nikki Wyngaard (Sr, Kimberly) came off the bench to score a career-best 10 points, draining two of three 3-pointers.
The Yellowjackets (4-18, 0-14) had no players in double digits, and were led by Kesley Thingvold and Hailey Hart with nine points each.
The win clinched a WIAC playoff spot for the Blue Devils. The tournament format was changed this season, and only six teams advance to the tournament.
Stout will host UW-La Crosse, Saturday, Feb. 14 at 5 p.m., then will be at UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Feb. 18.
