Megan Maslowski (Sr, Marshfield) signaled the start of the final push and
Danielle DeWitt (Sr, Green Bay) contributed heavily as UW-Stout won their own Thanksgiving tournament with an 85-76 win over 22nd ranked St. Benedict Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
Maslowski nailed a 3-pointer with 6:02 remaining in the game to pull the Blue Devils (3-3) to within two points, 62-60, and started a 17-3 run to give Stout a 77-65 lead with 2:34 left in the contest.
During that slightly less than four minute span, DeWitt yanked down four rebounds, scored six points and had a steal and where she went coast-to-coast to score.
This contest was close throughout the game. Stout had a seven point midway through the first half, but the Blazers (2-1) swung the momentum back their way and had as much as an eight point lead, 32-24, with 3:19 left in the first half and took a 40-36 lead into halftime. The Blazers led for much of the second half until Stout took a 66-64 lead with five minutes left in the game.
DeWitt tallied 13 points in the game, 11 in the second half, and recorded six rebounds. Maslowski had 12 points, all 3-pointers, connecting on 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Stout's
Julia Hirssig (Sr, Rochester, Minn) led all scorers with 22 points before fouling out late in the game. Hirssig also had nine rebounds.
Tricia VanVreede (Jr, Little Chute) contributed 11 points.
Heather Gillund tossed in 17 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Blazers in both categories. Joelle Waytashek added 10 points.
Stout will host UW-Stevens Point, Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. and UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Dec. 5 at 4 p.m.
